Having the engine remain in the car is going to make for a bit of a challenge, but it can be done. I would undo the nuts on the engines mounts from below and lift the engine slightly, then you need to remove all the bolts that old it on and a couple of nuts then snake it out of there. It is not an easy task.
May I ask what kind of damage the one on there has?
And for a time estimate i would say 2 hours up to 2 days depending on your skill set.
I would support the engine from above and drop the subframe. Much easier on a lift, if you have access.
I think Toyota actually recommends removing the engine, which is how I did it when mine was leaking.
Support the engine and undo the motor mounts. Remove abs sensors and brake lines. Then remove subframe. If you have access to a lift itshould take about an hour and a half.
Personally, I'd rather pull the engine. Then I can clean the engine and bay at the same time, and inspect the clutch, and the difference in work is minimal.
Yeah, There is no other way around it.. You can not get it high enough to clear the subframe and the transmission... Two options, Pull the motor and tranny as one, or pull the subframe.. If you just need to do the oil pan might be easier to just pull the subframe
