If it has rust as bad as you are describing thats obvious, you'll need to do more. Since its going to be sitting for 6 months anyway you might as well take out the interior and see how bad it really is, my guess is you'll be pretty well rotted through in a lot more places then you know now.

Best choice would be to not buy it.

Here's what I did for a couple rust holes right around the rear tail lights -

1) Wirewheel the hell out of the area - bare metal only.
2) Cut out any section that still had rust I couldn't get to
3) Primed the bare metal with a self-etching primer (in a can @ Autozone)
4) Let primer dry
5) Went to the hole, and fiberglassed a patch into place (started from the back, and worked my way in, with about 5-7 layers of fiberglass)
6) Let fiberglass dry
7) Sand fiberglass flat so that it matches the contours of the metal
8) Measured, marked, and drilled the hole for the taillight stud that had rotted out
9) Primered area again with self etching primer.

I did this when I got the car 2 years ago. My hatch is still rusting (replacing it with one from another member once he parts the car the rest of the way out) but I have had ZERO rust come back in the areas I've repaired.

I'm in Wantage, looks like about 1 hour 30 minutes north of you.

One thing I was told about primer is that it is porous, and if you paint with only primer on bare metal it can still rust again.

Self etching primer - not the normal stuff. The self etching I use is a yellowish green. No rust has come back through it!
