Removing Rear Speakers

Awrighty then, I've searched, and the only info I can find on pulling the rear speakers is that I need to remove the rear hatch interior, disassemble half my intake, drop the exhaust, and take the front door of my house off of it's hinges, all while standing on my head and whistling the Czechoslovakian national anthem backwards.

after much headscratching, removing of some bits and bobs, and staring at the hatch, I haven't figured out the most logical way to remove the everything so I can get at the bedarned speakers.

Also, searching through the forums for this stuff, it seems the scuttlebutt is that I've got 6 speakers kicking around in my '89. I'm not sure if this is correct or not, but we'll see. I've just bought two sets of four inchers to drop in in place of the stockers, and I'm wondering which holes I should put 'em in, if indeed I have four speakers in the back -- the shoulder or the upward-firing place thinger in the hatch. I'll probably remove all four stockers from the back, and just replace 'em with the one pair of four inchers I bought for the rear, until I break down and buy components for the front, and fabricate mounts for 'em -- then I'll probably fill the blank holes (whichever set was left out) in the back with the 4" speakers from the front doors, for giggles.

Anyhoo, I'm no car stereo purist, and I'm replacing the stockers because 1) most aftermarket stuff tends to be better'n stock, and 2) my stockers are all rotted out, disgusting, and sound like crap. I bought me two sets of Kicker KS40s, 'cause that's what my local shop happened to have in stock, and they seem to have decent specs. Any "you should've bought X" comments will fall on deaf ears, since they'll sound better'n stock, and that's what I care about *grins*

Well that's about it! thanks in advance for the advice!

well, I don't believe 4" will fit in the shoulder mounted speakers in the back seats.. I believe they are a little smaller than that.. 4" will fit fine in your doors...

and to remove the rear trim to get at the upwards facing speakers (closest to the back of the car)... you remove the privacy cover (luggage cover) and there should be a single screw holding them on. Then they should just pop right off and you should be able to see the speaker pods. I believe the furthest rear speakers are 5.25" speakers.. that's what fit in my 88, but I believe the pods have been swapped from a 91-92 era car...

And to get at the shoulder mounted speakers in the back seat area... pop off the side inserts (the part that is obviously not part of the moulding itself, and not the piece that looks like part of the rear seat when the seats are up) by prying up the front of them, be careful, the snaps hold well, and can break easily. behind them you will see a few screws holding the trim on. (there are also a few screws that need to be removed in order to pull the side mouldings off that I am unsure of the location, they shouldn't be too hard to find)... You will have to lower the rear seats and unbolt them from the car so you can get the trim off (the mount for the rear seats goes through a hole cut in the moulding)... you will also need to pop off the little cover over the bracket the seat latches onto by first removing the little screw then sliding the plastic cover upwards.

now, you will see the little pod mounted to the body of the car, and you will also notice that a 4" speaker wont really fit in that location.

Sorry if my explination is a little, well, choppy, but it's 2am and it's the best I can do right now... if you want anything cleared up let me know!

The rear speakers are 4.5's, but 5.25's have been said to fit with a bit of modding. There are also more than 1 screw holding the rear plastics on, I have a baggy of about 4-5 for each side panel, it's real easy tho. Just keep taking the screws out and pulling until none left and it'll slide right out. The speaker pods are held to the frame by 3 bolts, then you're golden.

Alrighty then! I stared at it for a while longer, then I got out ye olde screwdriver and ratchet wrench, and followed standard operating procedure of "unbolt stuff until it falls apart, then unbolt more for good measure" and got everything in pieces!

I pulled the speaker boxes, howked out the old 4.5" speakers in there, went and exchanged the second set of fours I bought for a set of fives, which seem to fit perfectly. my preliminary test fit seems to show that everything has cleareance, but we'll find out tomorrow whether everything fits. I tested teh system prior to reassembly, and all four speakers seem to...well...speak *grins*. Hope my new deck gets here soon, since right now, music sounds better on my $16 earcup headphones than it does through my new speakers :p $50 walmart/best buy/wherever deck'll do that to you (previous owner slapped it in there when factory system died)

anyhoo, thanks for the help and advice -- tomorrow is for bolting panels in, and bailing out my spaire tire well -- it's raining right now, and my hatch leaks *grin*

cheers!
