I pulled all the factory protective loom and sheathing off of my harness over the past few days, and today decided to clean up the harness a bit by removing wires and such that were no longer necessary.

I was working with my TSRM today, and following the pinouts I traced back a bunch of wires no longer necessary to me that I plan to remove.

My question is, will I cause problems by removing the EGR VSV wire, FPR VSV wire, CSI time switch and CSI wire? (others, too. I just can't think right now)

My main concern was the wires associated with the CSI. I don't want the ECU planning on something being there and giving me trouble. What I removed, I removed cleanly, so if ever necessary, I can reconnect without any hassles.
Another connector was for the heater VSV. I want to remove that, but wasnt sure if there would be negative consequences.

I also noticed that the 4-pin round connector that just sort of dangles near the fuse block underhood, wires into the injectors. Is this just a diag connector so you can fire the injectors manually using an SST? I imagined it was, but again wasn't sure. If it is, then I'm removing that.

thanks!

I did the same thing. I laid out the unwrapped loom in the bay where I wanted everything to go, everything I no longer needed I laid back onto the loom and wrapped it. That way, if for some reason I needed the wire later on, I could cut open that part of the loom and the wire would be there. Also, if it's not plugged in, just unpin the connector and tape or shrink the terminated ends and then wrap it up.

Thanks Jimi. Yeah, any wire that I remove gets de-pinned from the connector, then coiled up, and labeled it's terminal name in case I have to put it back.

More fun to come tonight after work. Yayzorz.
I'm going to keep "plugging away" heh... aw, I hate puns...

One more question for now: By snipping the yellow wire of the Fuel Pump resistor, that deactivates it, correct? Are there any wires left after doing that that are necessary? I know that I can remove the yellow wire from the harness after that, but does that render the other wires useless? I probably just have to read the EWD, and I would be right now, but it's at my garage... I'm sure I'll figure it out after I go there tonight, but a little feedback always helps.

there are no negative affects to removint the heater valve and it's associate wiring. i doubt the ECU will throw a CEL if you remove the CSI, as many people have done it.

also, i have completely removed my fuel pump resistor AND relay. there are NO wires on my passenger side wheel well. i cut them where need be, and soldered/heat shrink wrapped them together, and tucked them away into the passenger side fender. :) very clean looking.

you'll be pleasantly surprised after you remove all this un-needed stuff, as it makes the engine bay much more friendly. :) next for me comes the driver's side fender. ;)

Yeah, Shaeff. I'm planning on shrinking the harness down to the bare necessities. I have the body harness out of the engine bay and ready to become stripped down from the AC junk as well.

heh, no A/C here either, no cruise control, no TEMS anymore, no heater valve, no FP relay or resistor, no charcoal cannister, no throttlebody linkage on the valve covers :) the list goes on, but i cant remember any more off the top of my head.

have fun with it! you'll definatley learn alot about what goes where. :)

OK, put a chain around my neck, and call me your pet DUMB ASS................But, Do we gain 15-20 horses by gutting a harness? What's wrong with just unplugging the wires you don't plan on using? Or, Here's an idea.......Unplug the wire and drive the car before cutting it off. That way you know if there will be a negative effect before you cut.

WTF, thats ban material right there bud!

Both me and shaeff have done this (I'm not fully done), we know this car and what it needs or doesn't need. That is why he is asking, to get info from the ones that have done this. If you want to see why, look at the pic of my bay below.............then post up a pic of your bay. Not everything is done for HP gain chump.

First off, my harness was on fire at one point in it's life, and repaired. However 170,000mi has taken it's toll on most of the wires and they are brittle. I would still do this if the harness was in good condition though....
I figured I'd give this a shot, and If it didn't work, my original Plan A: was to buy a new harness. If I can save money by doing this, and getting it to work well, I've saved money and won't have to make Plan A: into Plan B: .

Good point, Jimi!

I'm not in it to gain the M4d 7y73 jdM hP gainz.
I'm in it to make my car into what I'll be happy with. Most of that includes not having 30 unused wires taking up a 1" thick piece of convoluted tubing wrapping around my engine bay like a damn snake. This is something that I've been interested in doing for quite some time, and now I've got the time, and means to do such a thing.

Pics and info on what I've done so far are here:

Small update:
I removed the diag block underhood and depinned the wires from the main plug, did the same with that round 4-pin plug that connects to the injectors.

Got rid of a bunch of other random wires, and found out that the terminals that I got from work to use on the new wires were close, real close. But unfortunately not close enough.

That wasn't a big deal since I could just cut the original o2 sensor and KS wires leading to the main plug and just splice them in.
I seem to have misplaced my camera for the time being, so no pics available.

(oh, and Jimi: the wires are off the floor and all straightened out ;) )

haha. where they belong!!!!!

Recent pondering has me thinking that I will not be using TCCS when the car runs again...

AEM is looking mighty tasty... :yum:
Plus, it will be more accomodating to me as far as removal of such items deemed "unworthy" in my quest to gain 15hp by gutting this harness...
