Already stated but going from nothing to 450hp is a huge step. I wouldn't be surprised if you crashed it the first day.

my first car was a 86.5 n/a sup. slow as hell....... now I drive my turbo sup with 300 hp still alittle slow but i'm looking for a build up to 450-500 whp. But I have the driving experience now and I am knowledgeable on what to do. I am 22 and have been driving since i was 18. all supras for me so far.

The stock turbo @ 14psi would be well past pushing his limit. How many kids with little civics with the basic bolt ons wreck. Driving alone takes time not to mention really learn how to drive. Knowing your ability to manage the car within the cars limits. That takes along time....

I remember when i was 13 and my dad bought me an 1980 camero with a small black 400 and a turbo 350 tranny. However my brother drove up until my 16th birthday. I went to New York for a soccer tournament right before my birthday and keep in mind i was driving the car with my brother and dad every chance I got. So they knew I could drive the car pretty good. Some nights me and my friends would push it out of the driveway and down the street and crank her up and go for a ride.

When I came back from the tournament I jumped straight in her b/c i was officially 16. I started her up and at first i was like hmmmm she sounds a little different but I was like fuck it. I get to a stop light with my friends and I in the car and a few of my other friends were behind me. So i decided to lock her down .... I held the brakes and floored it but the tires were having a hard time trying to spin so i was like WTF. I turn around and brought her home to my dad and brother who were just sitting like nothing was wrong

They start blaming me that I did something wrong so my dad is like pop the hood. We are looking around to see whats issue ..... Then I noticed that there were only 6 spark plug wires. Then all i hear is my damn dad and my brother laughing their ass off. His first remark was son "You out of all my children ..... did you really think I was going to give you a loaded gun and tell you not to shoot it."

I was pissed beyond belief .... But now I understand why he swapped the small block 400 to a 256 straight 6. I have not wrecked a car yet but I have come very very close numerous times. Rear wheel drive is fun but it can be dangerous too. When you brake in a corner and you feel that rear end start to slip and come around...... Lets see where you pull out the driving experience to know what do ....... Without thinking.

Sounds like decent mods to get into that power range. You should be good to go.

As for the driving young thing, don't fret. I started my supra project when I was 16. I am now 21 and the mechanics just finished reinstalling the built motor (I ended up w/ BHG and having to rebuild so I went for the built bottom end.). By the time you actually get your car built (and rebuilt after the head blows because a coolant line ripped in half on the highway while your dad was driving and you were away at school....) you will have enough experience driving other cars to handle it.

lol why is everyone telling this guy what to do man he asked for advice on a build not a lecture on driving ability.

Because, as the owner of a certain yellow MKIV taught us, high powered sports cars and teenagers don't tend to mix awfully well.

So bloody true! Did you see where he wrecked that viper on TV too! I think that Hulk Hogans kid should be shunned from the supra community, I think a lenching is in order(per state regulations ofcourse)

Really…. The last time I checked supras were torque monsters ..... It takes time to really know your car. That’s like me saying well if I drive my 97 maxima enough I will have enough road experience to handle my 450+rwhp supra ...... WTF????

I think cars, money and girls are pretty much most teenager aspirations. So I will give him my ideas….

Since he wants 450rwhp I say buy another 7m block. Build it while you drive the car. It sucks not driving the money pit. While you are at it get used to 14psi which will be closed to 300rwhp and finally.... Go big or go home.

I would personally go in this order of mods…. If you have the funds

1) Replace all the hoses, belts, get the best fluids, put some mt90 in the tranny and replace the oil in the rear end ….. Plan to spend $500-1000 for random things might pop up like replacing the radiator and minor problems that old cars have

2 Good stock brake rotor w/premium pads, Coil-overs or a good spring & shock combo, 16x10, 17x10 or 18x10 wheels w/tires 275+ wide. You will need them because there is no sense in having big hp if you cant control it.

2) BIC DDP (divorced down pipe) and BIC 3.5in exhaust

3) ARZ BBK (big brake kit)

4) Stand alone ECU(Stinger),550 or 680 CC injectors, 67+trim Turbo (Talk to upgradedsupra, bigaaron, doward, MDC, JDUB just to name a few of the stand up guys on the forum you can go to and they will provide you with great information)

In the mean while build that spare block balanced and blue printed forged internals, upgrade the valves, light weight flywheel and when you are ready to drop her in put the two motors side by side. I found that to be an easy way not to get lost with all the parts so basically remove, clean, and put it on the new motor.

^ wut he said, brands will differ but what you need for 400 reliable hp is

fuel, decent sized injectors, 550's will be working hard at 400+ so i'd go bigger just to be safe.

air, A turbo 67MM or more like stated, a 60-1 style could even do it + good intercooling.

spark, not so much the plugs or wires you use but how you control it, It doesnt matter how much $$ you put into the engine, it wont mean jack shit if you cant tune the car to run right. I went w/ maftpro and dont regret it because of how easy it is to adjust on the fly.

you have the basic idea for the block, and exhaust work, i'd go for some headwork if you have your dads financial support on this.

Quite frankly, you need to get driving experience, people dont realize how much hp 400hp really is. Just because you read magazines where the average hp is in the 500's or because most people here are already in the 300+ range doesnt mean you will know what to do with it.

unlike the popular smaller cars, even with just 190hp, if your unexperienced you do not want this car to get away from you.

Frankly, it is how you drive that decides whether you crash or not. Experience driving your run of the mill 200+ whp car is more than enough for daily driving. If you build your motor and race around then it doesn't really matter how much experience you have since you will eventually end up on lady luck's wrong side.

Hogan's kid crashed because he was racing... end of story. Most of the crashes I have seen that resulted from non-racing/speeding activities were the fault of (A) stupid driving that anyone with any experience would know enough to avoid or (B) factors beyond your control like a dump truck running a red on the wrong side of the road and hitting you head on.

Sure knowing your car will sometimes make the difference between life and death (see: how to dodge a dump truck that ran a red and is about to hit you head on), but really... it isn't so much about the horsepower as it is being comfortable with the car and knowing all of its +ives and -ives and how to control them. For that kind of knowledge (specifically for your supra), you need to drive your supra, not some maxima for 8 years.

I've got a question.

How was a 15 year old able to get enough time behind the wheel to find the 230 or so horsepower boring?. Do they start handing out driving licenses at 7 years old out there? :D

My first car was a 240hp 5.0L domestic V8 with a stick and yep it got boring PDQ.

What I tell younguns and their parents these days is to book the kids in for an advanced driver course at a race track as soon as possible as the driving lessons are only teaching them how to pass the test.

so many people don't understand how fast a 400whp car actually is.

hell, the first time i cranked my stock ct up to 15psi (289rwhp/ 295tq on a mustang dyno) i was giggling for days. and that really wansn't that long ago.

aside from that, i learned how to really control the car. to push it to it's limits without passing them.

now it's time for 400+rwhp.

Shaeff: Agreed 100% a genuine 400+rwhp on street tires can be a deadly combination!

With traction control off I can turn the rears to 100mph ground speed easily.
(have the data logs to back this up)

I'm planning for a maximum of 400rwhp, and my build is fairly mild:
Ported/polished head w/ comp cams springs
Probe pistons, Titan 1.4 mhg, resized rods, ARP studs Stage 3 clutch, aluminum flywheel/ driveshaft (with TWO safety loops, IJ)
MAFT, upgraded oil cooler, separated DP, 3 inch exhaust.
I think this will get me just past 300RWHP.

After it's running(and broken in), I will add a T-4 turbo, SAFC and 550's.
With this, I expect to safely runn 400HP without really killing the engine's life expectancy.
