Take that boost leak tester you rigged up and grab a piece of silicone coupler, stick it on the tail pipe and pressurize it. Helps immensely with finding tiny leaks pre o2 and you can take your time inspecting all the connections and joints on the exhaust system.

cant you hear rod knock during idle? or even at higher rpms when cruising? i can ONLY hear it when im accelerating.

and yeah the burnout was only a few seconds... the motor was at full operating temperature

when it first starts. it can usually only be heard under acceleration. sometimes you wont even hear it at all inside the car. ive had it before and been told by a friend when he heard it as i drove off. i tried windows up and down with radio and ac off and could never hear it. had him drive away while i was standing near the car and heard it clear as day. pulled it apart and the #2 bearing was worn as was the crank journal. this was on a 7mge in my white 86.5 mk3. when id let off the gas in gear it couldnt be heard nor at idle or reved in neutral. i had him rev it while i listened underneath etc..

Considering he only hears it under load, I bet it's an exhaust leak...

That was my first thought, since he said it seems to get louder with load. How does it sound free-revving?

its hard to here free revving because the sound of my exhaust almost covers the sound of the ticking.

first thing i thought to was an exhaust leak but when i opened my hood it didnt sound like it was coming from the exhaust side... but it was really hard to tell over the sound of the engine. it is def loudest in my car.

also seems to be slightly louder when the motor is cold (i can here it clicking at any amount of throttle except idle)

I vote exhaust leak. Hard to hear free revving, more noticeable under load. Drive it around for a while, then inspect your exhaust. Black stains will be evident dripping out of seams where it may be leaking. If it's up by the manifold, it will make white stains. Make sure your turbo -> manifold bolts are tight. The ones on my supra backed right out one summer. Blew a hole in the gasket from being so loose.

updates? Hopefully it is just an exhaust leak. If that's all any of us ever had to worry about, you'd never be able to find a supra for sale.

sorry i left you guys hanging. i have been super busy. my inspection ran out on this thing and i have no cats anymore so i havnt been driving it until i find somewhere to inspect it.

anyhow, i have identified it as an exhaust leak. i havent pinpointed it due to lack of time. im thinking it is preturbo because the taps are so exact and not muffled like i would imagine they would be post turbo.

my buddy finally convinced me to boost and i did and i could smell exhaust inside my car after i did lol so it makes sense.

one positive aspect... driving around for a week without taking it above 3krpms.... 27mpg!!

im really hoping my exhaust manifold gasket isnt bad. that seems like a pita to change.
