Redline Shockproof Gear Oil?

Has anyone found it easier to shift their R154 transmissions with the Redline ShockProof LIGHT oil instead of the HEAVY version?

If you read the Red Line spec sheet on this oil, you will find it's designed for heavy loading like you would see on a drag car. Not much point in using it IMO when MT-90 will do a better job for the street.

I don't think MT90 is the best transmission oil for the R154 when it comes to wear AND shift quality. I'll try the Redline Shockproof light and report my findings in the blog.

if you use MT-90

beware, sometimes it wouldn't go into 2nd or 4th gear, although that problem seems to dissipate it's self

Every one recomends nothing but Redline MT-90
Using a little shock proof may help but you dont want to use pure shock proof because the R154 syncros dont like it from what I have been told.

Keep telling yourself that MT-90 was made specificly for transmissions that call for GL-4.

That's your transmission, NOT the oil.

I think you should try it, the risk, aside from cost, is next to nothing and you may find something you like.

I went from the Redline oils to Mobil 1 syn 75-90 (yes, the one with the LSD additive in it) on a long shot and to my surprise it has definitely improved shift quality in my worn out R154 over Redline. Despite the fact that everyone on here will say you're a fool for running anything other than MT-90...

Try shifting fast

It may feel "smoother" with an LSD additive, but it's not functioning as intended and will slow your shifting down and wear worse.

dejacky - Like I mentioned before I think you should definitely try it for yourself. You'll always have forum goons, like Poodle here, telling you why everything will wear faster, shift worse, burn your car to the ground and kill 10,000 puppies if you don't [insert what every other lemming says here]...

Over the past 4-5 years I've tried:

Redline MT-90
Redline 75w-90NS
Redline 75w-90 (regular)
Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90 (really didn't like that stuff)
Mobil 1 75w-90 syn

So yes, I can.

I appreciate everyone's input. Something I've noticed about the redline shockproof heavy oil is it being more difficult to shift when the car is warmed up or has been driven for a while. I can only relate this to the higher hot viscosity number of the oil. Shockproof light has a lower cold and hot temperature viscosity, so I'm hoping this will help my Soarer R154 shift more effortlessly. The cold temp viscosity of shockproof light is 80, whereas MT90 is 90, so it will be interesting to feel any difference.

I've used MT90 in a w58 transmission and it was good, but not sure if it was "the best." Has anyone tried Castrol VMX80 as well?
