Rebuilt the engine, diesels a little when turned off.

I just rebuilt my 7M-GTE and got it in and running again. Timing is set at 10 deg. but when I turn it off it diesels out. The cams are in the right position so is the crank so don't bother throwing that out there. Is there an extra step to adjusting timing with the CPS other than just turning it to get it to 10 deg? Or do you have to go in the Diagnosis Box and jump two connectors?

Dieseling refers to when a gasoline engine behaves like a diesel engine, ie, it continues to run without the ignition system. (For those that don't know diesel engines, they do not have a spark ignition system.) Dieseling occurred on cars with carburetors, and would usually happen because of poor quality gas, contaminants in the cylinder, or imperfections in the cylinder causing hot spots.

On a fuel injected motor I'm not sure how it could diesel. I suppose the cold start injector could be leaking, or maybe a defective fuel injector, something to contribute the fuel. But you still need an ignition source.

Could hot spots in the motor cause the fuel to ignite once the motor has been shut off?

Possible, yes, but where is the fuel coming from if it's been turned off? And If he is using the right octane of fuel (92+), it is very very difficult to get that grade of fuel to diesel.
