LOL at "only" 600-650. I'm in the middle of a build up myself, so my theory is this. If you have to ask, let your wallet answer.

In my uniformed opinion, the stock rods are good to mid 500's. More than that, buy new rods.

or have new bushings put in, destress the rods, have them balanced and shotpeened and they are good for more horsepower than most people need

If you can't afford the best set your sights lower or you'll just be building an expensive hand grenade :(

Jake: No probs not cheap but at this level nothing is.

So yeah, I dont think I'd even try this with an auto tranny, but just wondering if a 5 speed is easier to do?
Thanks,
Jake

I find that funny, as i would be more willing to tear into a auto tranny that a 5 speed.

Press on a gear and chip it, its all over with. Syncros and bearings are cheap compared to gears.

WOW back from the dead. I guess I can contribute...

Be lazy and send it to Marlin Crawler. Their bearing kits are the same as MDC's. Their rear bearing plate (I should post a pic of the OE one, its ~1/2 as thick as theirs), shifter seat bushing, new 1st gear thrust washer and a few other misc things. Here is what I looked like when it came back to me:

Their standard service is $895 - which includes parts, labor, cleaning and warranty. I had purchased all the parts to do the rebuild myself (their rear bearing plate, all the bearings, syncro's, thrust washer (1st), etc) so I more or less paid for their labor, which came out to be about $425 (something like that). When I looked at my time, the fact I didn't have a press or bearing puller and would have been running around town getting things pulled apart and pressed together, it was well worth the $$. Besides, this is what they specialize in. Me, not so much...

If you want the down and dirty details, talk to CJ @ Marlin. Tell him Brandon sent you...
