Hello all this is my first post however I have been around for a couple of months researching. This summer I Had a mid life crisses and having always wanted to pull and rebuild an engine I bought a 89 turbo with engine problems.
I have now pulled the engine out and found that it spun a bearing and everything else does not look too bad.

Now here is where I would like a little specific help hopfully without too much debate. I was hoping to rebuild this car to the 550-600 HP range. What have you done to your Bottom end to take this? I have seen on a couple of sites Rebuild kits for the bottom end that say they are good to 1000hp are they? What brand have you used that has held up?

Now my second question is how far do I need to take the Head to give me this HP range? I realize that the sky is the limit really on the money you can spend but while I am not rich I want to do this right so I have a reliable car that I can drive and enjoy without ripping it apart. Any advise would be greatly appreciated . By the way this site Rocks!!!

OK
build the bottom block w/ like JE pistons and crower rods that will definitely hold some hp but the stock rods have held up to 600 hp that i have seen. just make sure you replace the pistons, they are the one of the weak points to the 7m. you shouldn't have to do much to the head mayb just a set of cams and a port and polish if you feel like it. for 500-600 hp your gonna need a bigger single turbo setup w/ the supporting fuel system and accersories. goodluck w/ your build

I'm shooting for similar goals, heres what I came up with from my research...

If you never want to tear it apart again:

Forged Pistons: I went with wiseco's, JE's are also very popular (iirc they are the lightest) or if you want to save some money, look for the Probe Forged pistons group buy, I think it's still going.

Rods: You should be ok with fully inspected, then prepped, resized with ARP Rod bolts, but for ultimate peace of mind, go with forged rods! Even with the forged, good idea to have your machinist inspect to make sure everything is sized correctly and round, I'd call that step necessary if you go with Eagles

ARP Main Studs

All new bearings of course I'd probably pick the NDC's, however I already have ACL's in there

New Toyota Oil Pump, and then don't assume it's good, spec it out according to the TSRM, add a 5mm shim, and clean it!

New Oil Squirters

Oil relocation kit, dual filter setup, full flow thermostatic oil cooler setup (if I worder that right lol), a bypass filter, and a Sump. This is the ultimate in oil filtering / cooling, except for a dry sump setup. Your engine will LOVE YOU!

Metal Headgasket: I went with cometic because it is the most forgiving for surface roughness average (RA), the HKS Stopper gasket is the best of the best, but it also costs $300 and is probably overkill ;) It is extremely critical that you know the attention to detail and special machinery required to deck the gasket surfaces down to the RA needed for the HG you choose

ARP Head Studs (read the instructions!!! Don't just torque away...)

A fully rebuilt stock head should be fine! If you want to spend money though, larger springs, an upgraded valve train, and then port & polish (or extrude hone!!!) couldn't hurt!

That should pretty much do it for the engine as long as everything is done according to the TSRM

Don't assume the machinist knows what he's doing!!!

You will of course need larger fuel injectors, afpr kit, larger turbo setup, full exhaust, something like a maft-pro or preferably a full standalone ecu, IC, ic pipes, etc etc... many supporting components to safely make this power!

I think that just about covers it, keep researching! Read the 7M Build Guides in the technical section, there are also some very well documented builds in the gallery / build section, mine and grimjack's come to mind as very step by step and good amount of pictures, especially grimjacks!!

Also, buy your stuff from stores that support our community :) Look in our vendor's section here for some great deals!

That was probably the longest post I've ever written, good luck!!! Make sure and start a build thread :)

Just found this on the internet
Toyota 7MGT Upgrades

In our opinion the Toyota 7MGT engine is the absolute best powerplant available. You can make huge amounts of HP reliably if not cheaply. Low 12. s and high11. s from a early body style Supra is very common and not very hard to do. The down side to this engine is there is very little bolt on equipment that makes much difference. You need to jump right in and do the big stuff. Sure, you can do and air filter, exhaust, EVC, Etc. but the real power comes from serious Turbo and fuel system upgrades. Along with these mods the internal engine pieces must also be upgraded to withstand the extra heat and stress.
Our standard street buildup is about 500 HP on pump gas and 600+ on race fuel. Internal Engine work is fairly straightforward and all pieces are readily available. The Turbo and fuel system is a bit more complex. The stock management system even with an AIC cannot support much more than
425 -450hp because of the Air flow meter restriction. We use aftermarket Speed Density Metering management such as the Electromotive TEC-II, the HALTECH F9A, or the HALTECH E6
The stock ignition system and timing curve is also very good for most street applications once you have control of the fuel and eliminate the air flow meter. To keep the stock ignition and eliminate the fuel only you would use the HALTECH F9A system.

Fuel System Upgrades:
Depending on what kind of HP you are trying to make and what you want to spend you have 3 viable approaches to getting fuel into your 7MGT. Using a VPC or
F-CON is not the answer.
Stage-1 Fuel System Upgrade: $425.00
This is for those of you that are doing mild street upgrades and just need a bit more fuel.
Bosch Racing Fuel Pump
Adjustable Rising Rate Fuel Regulator
Stage-2 Fuel System Upgrades:
For up to 450 HP while retaining the stock fuel management system.
Option-1 $965.00
Bosch Racing Fuel Pump
550cc Fuel Injector Upgrade
Adjustable Rising Rate Fuel Regulator
More fuel all the time. Definitely affects fuel economy and everyday driveability. Also makes it pretty much impossible to pass smog. Easy install with not much to adjust but the regulator.

Option-2 $1095.00
Bosch Racing Fuel Pump
2 Injector AIC System with controller and (2) 550cc fuel injectors.

Includes new over the valve cover pipe with the injector bosses built in.
This is a great way to do it if you want to keep the car running just like stock except when you are at high boost levels and really need the fuel. Will also pass Smog inspection. Controller is adjustable for injection starting point and
duration.

Stage-3 Fuel system upgrades:
Programmable management system upgrades for all out 500+ HP systems.
These systems require using a laptop computer to set the fuel and/or ignition curves. Both systems are complete with software, sensors, tuning manual and baseline programs. This is for those of you that want to get the most out of your 7MGT and retain good driveability. There are 2 methods. The first is to scrap the fuel and ignition system completely and use a stand alone computer to control all aspects of the engines operation( TEC-II or HALTECH E6 ). The second is to retain the stock Ignition system and curve and just control the fuel (HALTECH F9A). Both have their merits. It really depends on the gas you will be running and your how much control you want. A very heavily modified street engine running pump gas will really require the ignition control of a complete stand alone system to keep detonation under control under high boost low octane situations.

Individual Components:
Fuel Pump $269.00
Fuel Injectors
440cc $85.00 ea
550cc $95.00 ea
AIC Controller. ( Up to 4 extra injectors.) $395.00
( 6 injector controller.) $850.00
Pressure regulators
Adjustable Rising rate boost dependent $219.00
Bosch adjustable baseline regulator $69.00
Electromotive TEC-II systems: $1895.00

Baseline program, spark plug wires, trigger wheel mounting diagram
Optional:
Bolt on crank trigger system using your crank pulley. Includes
bolt on mag pick up bracket $195.00
Note: Electromotive TEC-II systems do not include wiring harness. It is a wire yourself system.

HALTECH F-9A System: $1195.00
Complete system with wiring harness and all needed sensors ( Less Knock and 02 sensor) Programming Software, Programming cable, Comprehensive Instruction Manual, Baseline Program.

T04 Exhaust manifold with Wastegate Port $795.00

HKS EVC-IV Boost controller $599.00
HKS EVC-EZ Boost Controller $395.00
HKS Turbo Timer (with harness.) $179.00

This is the common stuff we do to these cars. It is by no means comprehensive. We do all our own fabrication and machine work so there is very little we cannot do. If you have a specific request or want something you do not see listed, contact us.

If you want a stout bottom end for cheap just copy me and do a 2jzge swap. Read my thread for details.

It sounds like you dont have any upgrades yet so now is the time to decide what to do.

Here is a hint: just because it is listed in a vendors catalog doesnt mean that you need it.
