Rebuild Questions

I am looking to do a rebuild and was wondering what is recommended? I'm around 375 whp(and staying there) and now want straight reliability. I know the obvious of metal head gasket and decking but I need to know the other stuff.

Other questions....

- Clevette / King / Stock rod bearings..... Which are best?

- Should I replace the main bearings?

- I'm unsure what it means by resizing the rods. Is it the bearing part being resized?

- Should I have the crank balanced?

- Do you have suggestions for the rebuild?

Thanks, josh

- I'm unsure what it means by resizing the rods. Is it the bearing part being resized? The Big end hole has the part lines surface to close the hole slightly then honed to it's original size

- Should I have the crank balanced? As long as you're using stock parts no if not stock parts yes

- Do you have suggestions for the rebuild? Don't cut corners ;)

Thanks, josh

I would go with the proper thickness headgasket (which brings you closest to the factory compression ratio after decking the head/block). ARP head studs or bolts, Clevite main and rod bearngs, and then of course a gasket set and a ring set. My advice, do not even attempt to disassemble/reassemble the engine yourself unless you fully understand what you are doing.

I'm not going to have a problem disassembling it. I'm worried about the specs on the rebuild. I keep reading threads about people rebuilding and then come to find out that they have rod knock.

Does a machine shop install rod bearings and rings and then put them on the crank (spec work)or do they just do the mill work? Because I'd be decking the block and head at the same time.

Also, is it recommended that I get a new oil pump?

Is there anything wrong with king bearings?
That's what I told the machinist to order.
...I read the marketing crap on kings web site about the thicker conforming layer and heard a few positive comments so I thought they might be the better choice for avoiding rod knock

Josh: While I admire people that want to DIY their 7M it's NOT a simple motor to build and will bitchslap you if you get it wrong!

miekedmr: I saw a set of King 2 layer bearings that had failed badly and they looked like putty and had splooged out the sides of the shells!

So apparently they're not as strong as traditional bearings? At what kind of power level did they fail?

It was in a big block Ford race motor on the dyno and the interesting thing was it had Clevite Mains and they were perfect so it wasn't an Oil or Build issue!

I'm not convinced the Bimetal bearings are the way to go after seeing these but King Trimetal's might be ok!

Personally I love the tech in the Clevites even if they require a fussy machinist!

Ive done everything to a car except an internal rebuild. Sorry, I'm just a little skeptical when it comes to a car that I put so much time and money into just to go to waste because I was .0010 off. I think I should be as concerned as I am because I've never rebuilt before. So shoot me

Josh930,

I think you know the answer you are looking for... 7m's are not a chevy small block leave them to the people that are in the know at the machine shop. That way if something goes wrong (rodknock, oil preasure, ect) you know who to blame. Most shops honor their own work!!! At least the machine shop I used to work for in college did.

As far as JAV (Gravity) goes we should get a disclaimer for him....
