My leaking problem was from the lower rear window molding. I put RTV/silicone on itto cover any holes. Water may also slip through the winshield whiper hole and the wing mount holes.

Yea its definately common I think. Since all 3 mkIIIs Ive owned had the same issue. The lower molding on the rear hatch starts lifting and then leaks into the interior of the hatch. Then out to the floor from there. I used some RTV too.

I have a leak somewere around the rear hatch, it was somehow getting into the rear tail lights and the lens would fill up with water, short out the bulbs, and actually run into the spare tire well. I fixed it, drilled a couple of small holes 3/32", in to the bottom of the lens.

^Thats more likely the tail light seals, leaking in from the top and running into the tail lights.

The hatch leak... it could be the window itself, the trim, wing, antenna... pretty much anything.
