You could gear it lower (the N/A LSD and open diffs are 4.30 for example) keep in mind that you're going to see higher RPMs for a given speed.... hence a mileage hit.

the N/ a's are geared lowered ?

you mean gas mialege ?

eh, I only put about 500 to 1000 miles on it a yrs,, so,, its all good

Yeah, the N/A differential is geared 4.30:1 versus the pre89 Turbo LSD which is 3.91:1. The difference is close to 10%. Swapping in a N/A diff with LSD (it came with the sport package or seperately as an option, not the much more common open diff) is popular for people looking for better off the line power. The down side is that for any given speed your RPMs increase by the same percentage and your gas mileage takes a hit.

Gas mileage takes an immeasurably small hit, and may even improve in stop/go driving. How many times to I have to say this?

I don't know, how many times have you said it so far?

My mileage increase from swapping from a 4.30 to a 3.91 is quite measurable... predictable too. It's about 10%. I watched my mileage for over a year after the swap. I went from ~300 miles per tank to ~330 (in warm weather). My daily driving is 50% city, 50% highway. I know it's not the best method of measuring mileage especially if you're not running the tank completely dry, but it's enough for me.

On a side note, for the past few months my mileage hasn't been consistent due to fighting with a bad AFM and then trying to get my MAFT Pro dialed in.

My feeling is you changed your driving style 10% when you changed the diff. Several thousand miles of cruise control (on the same trip!) don't lie.

I tried a 4.10 diff and swapped my stocker back in later (3.91 I think?). Turbo cars do better with taller gears, in my opinion, because the turbo spools better with more load. I found that my car was running out of gear faster and spending less time in that turbo sweet spot.

Shouldn't be too much of a hassle to get a different rear end. Make your choice, 4.30, 3.73, or 3.91 LSD ;).

You have a way with words. Everything just sounds so simple when you say it..........;)

Pfff, I run a 4.10 rear end, and never run out of power. Then again, I have a lot more powerband then your 7M guys :)

By the way changing the diff is not fun. I had to build a support out of 2x4's that bolted to my jack to raise and lower it. It would have been almost impossible with just a jack alone since it weighs 80lbs and is tricky to get up there.

,, question ...

the rear end is independant right ? an if so, what does that really mean ? that the pumkin can be taken apart from the left an right axel ?

or does the whoile axel have to come off too ?

a friend said I might have to disconnect break lines .... is that true ?
my big fear of tackling this is that I dont wanna deal with rusty break lines, an fuck something up ....

need it broken down to me in a simple way to get the confidence to do this, i guess....

(4) bolt/nut combo holds driveshaft on

(5) nuts on (2) axle halfshafts on each side of the pumpkin.

(4)bolts & (2)nuts hold the pumpkin in.

Then your done drops right out.
No you dont need to undo brake cables.

i got the 2 lower bolts from the driveshaft, but the other two are rotated towards the top,,

how do i get to them,? ,, can I take it out of gear or take of the E brake so I can spin the tires, to spin the drive shaft ?

ok, cool, hopefully this is the last question... I am slowly working eask on the 5 or so nuts loos from the pumkin to ehr axels by loosening one, an letting down the ebreake spinning the wheel to access the next nut.
it is really rad to spin the rear wheel,.....

is that a indication that my problen is the rear end ?

an last of,,
I got 2 bolts loose on the bottom of the pumkim closer to where the driveshaft it.........
got ehr 2 lower bolts loose also that look like the pumkin attaches to som bracket looking thing..

now it looks like there are 2 nuts or something at the top near the fuel filter.....??????? thats my question,, how the hell do I get them,,

your mileage prolly isnt changing much. when you switch diffs you have to remember to tear down the tranny and replace the speedo gear with the correct gear. or its going to be about 5% to 10% off. so it seems better but its really not. and when your going about 80, you might auctually be going 70. get a gps and make sure!

I got 2 blots loose- pumkin to frame loose near the driveshaft loose,
an 2 bolts loose lower rear,,
but looks like there are 2 up on top.... how the hell do I get them off ?
