I come from a land down under
Bul: Yep it was STUPID expensive to build into an IRS (probably got more $ in the rear end than a LOT of the cars here in total) but given my driving style (or lack of) I figured at least this way I never have to worry about grenading it ;)

I can't help but think this is the result of rust more than the result of driveline stress:

I don't think this would have happened if your car would have been from Cali or Arizona etc...

Shaeff: as hard as you have (and continue to) worked on your Supra, I don't think we'll be seeing anymore videos of you sliding around in the snow and cold when it's finished. :icon_razz

ian: blown away. haha. i'm blown away. i knew you had it, but it never really HIT me. i never actually thought to myself: "hey chris, ian has a ford 9" rear in his supra!". haha!

brian: thanks! he's awesome!

suprabad:
heh, that was ONE winter, and i only took it out on days where there was no snow. (if you look closely in that video, there's no snow on the pavement, but there are some pebbles)

and honestly, you can't tell from the pics, but the rust you see on there is all surface rust. i can't even scrape it off with anything. a bit of sand paper makes it disappear!

however, i honestly don't care how it happened, so long as it NEVER happens again! ;)

and no, you won't catch me sliding anywhere in the winter, but you'll find me anywhere sliding in the summer. ;)

in all honesty, i would THOROUGHLY inspect the rear subframe before pushing any major power through it. my car lived it's life as an N/A until about 3 years ago when i swapped. at it's peak, the car made 289rwhp, 295rwtq @15psi on a blown stock turbo. - and i only had the car on the road for a total of about a year. i personally think that the crack was there all along!

here's what my subframe looked like when i dropped it to get it reinforced (because i wanted to be safe) please note the GIANT crack right through the front section above where the differential sits:

you think that was bad?

Good grief Evolution, you sure showed that subframe who's boss.

I'm going to measure and see if the 240SX bushing inserts will fit, so I'm definitely going to check out my subframe while the car is on the lift. Too many horror stories floating around.

So going about rebuilding the stock LSD unit is pretty spendy, no? Isn't the clutch package alone like $400 US? Then you've gotta buy the bearings and seals and whatnot, I bet it adds up if you do it the right way. Anyone have any input on the Kaaz LSD's? They are spendy too, but if you are spending close to as much as a Kaaz costs, I'd rather upgrade than keep the stocker.

won't matter as you'll still need to pay for seals, bearings, and of course the guy to set it all up...

the stock unit is pretty stout, as IJ said, it was the pinion getting starved of oil that caused the failures...

100% believe you, I know you will...lol.

Otherwise it would be like asking a fish not to swim, or a bird not to fly or a clueless newbe MkIII owner not to start a thread that perfectly describes all the symptoms of a bhg. :icon_bigg

ian: it's truly a thing of beauty. :) awesome work!

evolution: DAMN! you ripped that thing apart! what was your power level (i was still around 300rwhp, and have concluded (and others have, too) that the crack was there for years- probably even before i got the car!

suprabad: i built the car to have fun! ;) haha
