What kind of oil do I put in my 1990 Mk3 Turbos LSD rear end? Since its LSD does it need and Additive to make it lock up? I was looking at a bottle of 80w-90 Hypoid gear oil that said it was compatible with LSD, but someone else told me I may still need to add the Additive to the oil?

Any info would be great, thanks again.

It doesn't need additive to make it slip. It needs a friction modifier so that the clutch packs are able to slip and not be locked up constantly.

If it says it is compatible it probably is however there may not be the right amount. Too much and you may still spin the inside wheel, too little and it may chatter. I have heard that the best idea is to just run straight Ford dyno oil of the proper viscosity and add additive until it stops chattering.

Yep, I run the ford stuff with the additive as I didn't want to make my diff loud (synthetics are hit or miss on making the diff loud)

Ummm...Red Line 75W-90 already has friction modifier in it. That is unless you're talking about the 75W-90NS. The LSD holds 1.4 quarts, so you'll need 2. Fill till it runs out of the fill hole...you will need a pump to fill.

Get Ford 75W-90 and the friction modifier at the dealer...for a high mileage LSD, it's the best choice IMO. Red Line can cause clatter in an LSD with a lot of miles on it.

A piece of advice: Remove the fill plug 1st, then the drain plug.

the oil drains easier when you have another hole for air to go in. its like those carnation milk cans. you always put two holes in it. with one the oil is trying to escape against the air that is coming in. but yeah in case you cant get it off too.

Not the main reason (as there is a vent anyway so it won't matter). The main reason is if you cna't get the fill off you can still drive the car. If you take the drain off first and then try to the take the fill off but it won't, then you're SOL...

How much additive do you add when you use Ford oil or anything else? Would you use it with Valvoline 75w90 synthetic? My diff has 72K on it but has been sitting for over 4 yrs in the same shit. What would you recommend to cleaning it maybe (besides taking it apart).

Sorry for digging this up.... :)

Valvoline SynPower 75W-90 is a GL-5...it already has the friction modifier necessary for LSDs in it's formulation.

If you use the Ford gear oil, start with about 1 oz of the Ford friction modifier.

You could flush the differential with kerosene...just fill and turn the wheels (with the rear on jack stands) a few times. Then drain well, followed by the gear oil of your choice.

Im a GM guy so I used some corvette Dexron LS synthetic gear 75w90. It comes with friction modifier already in it. works perfect. I think it retails for like $45 a liter though.
