Has any one tried or really studied the stock IC to see if the tanks on top and bottom could be cut and rewelded?

I don't think it would be worth trying. The material is super thin and the core isn't very promising.
I've considered it, after all a significant issue with the efficiency of these is the horrid tank design. Unfortunately I can't think of a way to do it that wouldn't most likely result in a leaky intercooler.
i also considered it as a cheap way to get a side to side IC for a FFI, but considering you can pick up a half decent Megan IC for US$200 from AAP or 935, its not worth the effort imho
I considered it a way to make a 1j IC nearly bolt on. I have seen aluminum pop cans welded together, so I think it could be done. On the other hand, IIRC aluminum gets harder to weld as it ages.
