Hey guys, I'll be putting my motor back together next week, and wanted to know if it would be ok to reuse my MHG. I put just under 1k Miles on it and it seems to be in great shape. Now I read the thread about not using copper coat, most of the VHT (I believe) is still in tact on the HG. Now I was thinking about using some brake cleaner and scrubbing it all off carefully with a tooth brush or something similar. Then slapping it on the motor?? Good Idea or not?

Thanks

Yes, and no. Yes you can reuse the gasket. No you can't clean it off and just slap it on there. If the viton is damaged at all, you must totally remove the viton, and then use the copper spray to replace the viton. You only avoid the copper spray when the viton is on the gasket, as it will degrade the viton and cause your gasket to fail.

Make sure you get the rivets out and clean teh front and back of each layer, then copper spray each side of each layer as you put it back on the block. Use brakeclean and a toothbrush like you said it makes things so much easier

Thanks guys, I'm probably just going to reuse it, but they are only $120.

So I clean it up really good and then take it apart, and clean it, put the copper spray on each side then place each layer back on the block and then place the head on? Is this correct?

I just want to make sure that I'm only going to do this once at least on this motor.

Thanks

You also have to copper spray on the surfaces the contact the head and block as well. Basically, replace all the viton you remove with copper spray.

Sorry, missed that. Wait until you are ready to put the gasket on the engine to spray to outer contact surfaces. This will help it seal better, and also avoid possibly damaging the coating while it's sitting around waiting.
