Hello Guys,
I am in the process of continuing to upgrade my 87 Turbo. The leather seats are pretty much shot. I have taken them to several upholster shops, the news is not good, expensive and they are running al least 2-3 months out. I don't want to wait that long.

How many have racing seats? Are you satisfied with the way they work? Any brand names to stay away from. I found a pair of Sim's for just under $400. Any other brands that are good quaility?
Please let me know what you think.

This question is like asking....... rice or non-rice :)

I don't like racing chairs, I think they're cheezey, plus not as comfortable. Let's face it this car will never be lightweight. If you want your car to weigh 2000lb go buy a mr2 or something (just my opinion) :)

I had my seats reupholstered, it really wasn't too expensive if you shop around. I paid $600 for both front seats in two tone 100% leather made like stock.

My quote was "around $1000" for the front seats, add $700 for the rear. I don't think it is really "rice" to go to racing seats. I have kept her looking stock, except for the MKIV wheels.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Not sure where you were getting those "Crack Pipe" quotes. Even CST was just over $1000 for Fronts/Backs/SidePanels. You could go with the Katzkins and save some money by installing yourself.

If you are building your Supra as a driver then I would highly suggest recovering. That one change makes the whole car feel brand new.

I'm not a fan of racing seats unless you are building a race car - but that is just me.

Look deep inside your soul and do whatever YOU choose to do.

Personally, I think the stock seats are so comfortable, I don't even want to try any other seating option for our cars. Plus I worry about the seatbacks on cheap eBay seats snapping if I got rear ended...THAT would be a nightmare.

I've been thinking a lot about recovering, but I'm thinking of going w/ a fabric similar to what's on the 2.5R's recaro seats--something grippy that breathes. Leather can suck in the summer down here in Florida.

For those of you that have been quoted reupholstering costs, did the installer give you an itemized quote? I'm wondering if I'd really save anything on material costs by switching away from leather...

I was told he could do it in vinyl for about $400 instead of $600. (front seats only) I'm sure cloth would be about the same price as vinyl.

Sweet; personally I'd rather have $400-1000 invested back in the stock interior than buying 2 nice racing seats--cheapest "big brand" seats are what, Sparco Torino's?--at $550-650 each...but maybe that's just me.

The only time I'd really consider racing seats is if I was planning on putting in a cage/harness bar and a harness in.

the story of the hippo comes to mind once again:

Said with french Accent
Zee heeppopotamoose, he is not born saying, "Cool beans. I am a heeppo." No way, Joesay. So he try to paint zee stripe on him to be like zee zebra, but he fool no one. Then he try to put zee spot on zee skin to be like the leopard, but everyboody know he is a heeppo. So, at certain point, he look himself in zee mirror and he just say, "Hey. I am a heeppopotamoose and zere is nothing I can do about it." As soon as he accepts zis, he live life happy. Happy as a heeppo. You understand zis, Luban?

why try making a tank a model airplane? Its heavy its always going to be heavy. Keep the luxuries and get it reuhpolstered :)

I received a "lesson" in leather vs vinyl yesterday. Apparently the new, higher grade vinyl is superior to leather in many ways and is up to 50% cheaper, although the high end stuff is only about 1/3 cheaper.
BTW, I found a guy who will do it. Bad news, they are booking out until June.

I have tried the Sparco torino in my car but only for a week as they are uncomfortable as heck. Since I drive long distance often I put the OEM seats back in. I may recover mine one year. Maybe copy Keith :naughty:

If your looking to lose weight for power etc..I would suggest getting more power from the turbo then weight doesn't matter ;)

My car came with custom installed blue cloth seats from a Celica all-trac. He said they are half the weight of the Supra seats and they fit very well. I think he may have had to mod the mounts. I'm may sell these since I want to go leather.

The stock seats are okay in my opinion, just very heavy. I replaced mine with a set of reclining race seats for access to the rear. They are not cheezy or ricey. They fit good and look even better. The main reason I changed is that the guy I bought the car from weighed about 300 lbs,so you can imagine the condition of the foam...flat!!!
