If anyone cares, I once posted this in an almost parellel universe. heh
As far as the States go:
We should switch to the metric system in some ways, but not all.
As far as nuts and bolts, and sockets and wrenches etc -- we should have already switched!
Anything tool related to cars should be metric.
We should keep MPH.
We should keep weight of humans and weightlifting in pounds.
Fluids for cars should stay with the imperial system.
I always thought it was funny how tires and wheels are measured as a mix of both.
For example an MKIII's stock wheels are
225 (width of tire in mm -- metric)
16 (rim height in inches -- imperial)
37 (offset of rim in mm -- metric)
7 (rim width in inches -- imperial)
As far as machining goes and as far as tolerances, we should be imperial.
All of the machinist I have ever spoken to measure in imperial and not metric.
The thing is, all the tool makers: would lose if they only made Metric tools for us. Think about how much business Craftsman, Snap-On, Matco, Mac, etcetc would lose if we only had one system.
In the following pic, if we only had one system, about 1/3 of the tools would not be sold to us. So it is profitable for businesses and the economy to have both, from the point of view of some. Maybe the tool companies have an influence on all this?
