Yeah. The adverts are rather harsh. But what are you going to do? I think television in general treats intelligent people like idiots. Spend your time more wisely; work on your Supra! Or read, listen to the radio, sleep, do ANYTHING other than watching the telly.

I know the risks, and choose to accept them. Its no different from driving too fast, eating lots of red meat, living under powerlines, having unprotected sex, using a hair dryer in the shower or any number of things that can get you killed...Lets just put warnings on everything...because we all know human beings are to stupid to decide for themselves!
Cigarette smoking is so addictive for most people, it is rather different than the things you mention, sex and fast driving notwithstanding :icon_bigg
It is interesting you compare smoking to fast/dangerous driving, which is easily identified as an immediate danger to the driver as well as occupants, other drivers, passengers and pedestrians--plus, it's defined as an illegal activity. Cigarette smoking is a much more insidious danger--and it's also legal for those of appropriate age. It should be compared to sitting in a large closed off garage while running your car's engine--at first, no problems, but slowly it gets harder to breathe, you get tired/sleepy, and eventually you die. Of course, this is not a perfect analogy either, but it more accurately portrays the manner in which smoking kills.

Unfortunately, the problem seems to stem from a lack of responsibility on behalf of the people here. The Modern American Dream of a multi-million dollar lawsuit has liability concerns shooting sky high for companies; the warning labels are there as a "we warned you" for these sue-happy idiots. Once companies saw how McDonalds got pwnt by the lame-ass coffee spiller and then the tobacco industry ended up doling out hundreds of millions of dollars in a settlement to smokers that developed illnesses, they kinda went apeshit with the warnings. Of course, coffee is hot. Duh, cigarettes are bad for you. LIVE with it. I can never understand why people think they deserve millions of dollars for slipping and falling in a Wal-Mart or whatever.
People have really just lost their minds.
I don't want to take your right to smoke away, publicly or privately. I also think it's stupid for a non-smoker to think they're better than a smoker just because they don't smoke. But, I also think it's unfair for a smoker to hold it against every non-smoker he/she sees if a controversial anti-smoking advert runs on the tv--I don't smoke, but I didn't write the advert. Plus, many of the people I care about are smokers, and except for not enjoying the secondhand smoke experience, I really don't think much of it-- plus my mom's side of the family has smoked since before I can remember; so it's always been a part of my life.
And, I'm curious--why exactly do you argue so vehemently for a cause if you don't necessarily believe in it? You're not a trial lawyer are you?
