Hi guys, I wanted to know the basics behind rain0sensing wipers and if they can can be applied to a mk3 by someone like me, who doesn't have the experience but is willing and has, or can get, the tools he would need.

I'm looking to find out the basics behind it as I said and how hard of a job it would be to accomplish. Maybe some type of Official Electrical SM Expert could jump in here :icon_razz *coughJJcough* if anyone knows, or has any info on this lemme know. I'm just curious and want to do it some time if I could. Thanks.

it would be tough, and i dont think it would really be worth it, I have them on my Benz, it's nice but i wouldent take the time to install them on another car that didnt come with them.

I don't see why you couldn't add a kit.

One of my old mk3s, someone had fitted a light sensing kit. So when it got dark the lights would come on. When it was sunny again the lights would turn off.

lol I just came back to add this part on here. Thanks for the encouragement.

ck: I know what you're saying, but I plan to keep this supra forever and just as a DD so I don't care about weight reduction and adding all that much power (not that I ca with an n/a...without going turbo, which I wont :icon_razz). So I prefer thing like luxuries.

Thing I plan on doing:

-Rain-sensing wipers
-Auto headlights
-Redo headliner with embossed "T" emblem, rewrap interior
-Powdercoat sawblades to keep with the clean look (might get AM rims for summer)
-Speak to someone I know about rewiring the CC to have the foot/def. option, of course I need a 89+ CC first :icon_razz
-Uknown engine mods, nothing outrageous.
-No body mods (clean look)
-Miscellaneous details... i.e. engraving toyota symbols on the head of the stock lug nuts. A tiny detail which would seem like a waste to most, and many won't notice, but I think it would a tiny detail that if only a few notice, it would be worth it (and will still look clean).

Damn I threw my own thread off-topic, just realized this. So yes... the wipers!

There have been many types of ARS tried over the years but the one that works best projects an IR beam into the windshield at a 45 degree angle. If I recall correctly most newer cars that have ARS use the TRW sensor:

Here's an aftermaket sensor using the same approach:

keep this supra forever ;)

Thanks, the first one looks better because the link looked more professional...lol, but mostly because the actual unit itself looks nicer. The second one looks like a square grey box, even if the first one has to be mounted in the same place it would look a lot better. I skimmed through the sites but I'm gonna go through them more in depth now.

Thanks again....

That sounds like a nice feature. Do you remember how they rigged it or what they used?

I was going to say "Google is your friend!" Learn to Google.

I found several kits (including the one mentioned above) in a 3 second search. Installation doesn't look that bad - unless you try to rip one out of an existing car and try to retrofit it into your Supra.

Automatic headlights aren't too complicated. You could modify a circuit like this: http://www.electronics-lab.com/projects/automotive/006/index.html for the job. Or build a circuit with a photocell or photodiode, a comparator and a latching relay.

If you search on google you'll find several different ways of getting the job done. I do recommend that if you do this you use a circuit which has to be turned off manually or is buffered so that oncoming traffic won't have your headlights turning on and off constantly. As with any mods make damned sure what you use is going to WORK PROPERLY! Especially when working with components that can directly effect your safety and that of other on the road.

Finally, another Supra owner that understands Toyota's intent with the Supra!
+1 to you!
