I am using the 2J mechanical fan with my 2J (1JZ/JZA70 engine mount brackets) and need to replace my leaky radiator.

I'd like something nicer/blingy (after all of this hard work).

Others that have had the same stup, had issues with aftermarket radiators such as Fluidyne and Koyo... Fan makes contact and ruins your $$$$$ radiator.

Does anyone have the measurements of those, in comparison to the stock? I saw another aluminum rad (not name brand) that I'd like to try, if it's not as thick as the others and near the size of the stock one.

It measures...
Overall Size: 28"x17.25"x2.5"
Core Size: 27"x13.5"x2"
1.49" Inlet & Outlet

Opinions? I can go with a stck replacement if I really need to. I have a single, but do not expect any cooling issues from a stock/OEM replacement. So, not necessarily any "extra" cooling, but aluminum/bling would be very welcome.

Couldn't have picked any better timing for posting this. I just had to get rid of my Fluidyne b/c I'm also going with a mechanical fan setup.

Where did you find the radiator you're mentioning? I was getting ready to buy another OEM radiator to send out to get copied as a custom aluminum.

There are a few on Ebay... This is one of 'em @ ~$237 shipped, but there are some other auctioons (probably from same supplier) with "best offer" options. So, I can pay close to about $150 for an OEM replacement or get some bling (maybe added performance) for ~$75 more.

By the way: The stock one's core is about 1.25" thick and looks like there is about another 1.25" to the closest point on the fan. Seems like you may be able to get close to 2" thick and not have an issue, but I know that when you come to a hard stop, the fan flexes and may come in contact. I do not know what the amount of flex might be. That's why I wanted to know what the other aftermarket radiator's thickness was. If they are all 3-row, then I know that's the problem. A 2-row with a core at about 2" thick may be good-to-go.

FYI... What is the core thickness of the Fuidyne you have?

I just sent a best-offer for this JVT radiator. FOr a lil' over $200, it's worth lookin' at. Will let you know what the seller replies with. If it works out and I can get a discount, I may get a few more for my local DFW crowd and pass on the savings. Would probably cost too much to re-ship elsewhere, but I can ask the seller if he will.

Either way, I'd wait until we know that it can be successfully used...

I'll have to get up with the guy that bought it, tracking # shows it was delivered today, so I'll see if he can measure it for me.

MVPmotorsports, has it listed on their site as 24x19x2, will try to report back with how accurate that is.

Hmmm...read the comment, but can see why that would happen. Does the Fluidyne/Koyo, etc have grooves to use the top OEM radiator brackets? I had already assumed that I would make my own. I had also planned to make my own shroud, using thin sheetmetal.

Sounds like that person expected plug-n-play, but aside from that did not mention fitment or performance.

Would really like to see one being used with a 1JZ/2JZ. I do have one on the way...$210 shipped. Will see what happens when I go to install.

Definitely update with installed info. I, if not anyone else, am very interested in your findings. I will say that with my fluidyne, the bottom mounting points were slightly off, but nothing that little finagling couldn't take care of. Everything else was fine with it.

I'm willing to make some brackets if I have to, lol that'll be easy compared to some of the other custom shit I've had to make for the car/motor setup.

I got a 2jzgte tt setup (1jz eng.mounts) and I have an old OEM crapy radiator
that had a clearence/space of 3cm to the mechanical fan!

I still looking for a good replacement...but I do not have any heat up problems
until now with my 2jzgte tt,even when I am into street racing :biglaugh:

The max temperature I have seen so far is 92' degrees celcius!!! :icon_surp
But I have (2jz tt at 5000 kms so far):
*New toyota mechanical pump (dumped the old hydro pump unit/Aristo motor)
*New toyota water pulley with new coupling and fan (never had these $$$ cause I got an Aristo motor & couldn't find used parts)
*New accessories drive belt
*Kept the fan shroud with some custom mods (the shroud is not useless..)

And I have an old radiator from a 88 model supra turbo which is not leaking
yet but is rusty,1/3 of the fins are missing, and has a very dirty inside core :icon_evil Also using a cheap low quality coolant....

I study the stock radiator...At celicasupra.com a guy did a fantastic job
by searching and getting infos on stock radiators mk2 radiator (which is not plastic like mk3 and mk4 radiators) vs mk3 N/A radiator vs mk3 turbo radiator!

Here are the results: from CelicaSupra.com

MK2 "vs" MK3 Turbo and Non turbo and Aftermarket Radiators

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok all, Ive talked to one the most respectable guys on the forum and he asked me if I could do some research on the Differences. Well, Luckly I have all 3 Radiators Avaliable and Its been Wondered Why the MK2 Radiator Wont cool a 7MGTE even though they are the EXACT same Size. Well here we go.

MK2 Radiator
Length.... 25 1/4" Long
Height.... 15" Tall
Thickness... 1 1/4" Thick
Fins which is the only Difference in all 3 Radiators 44 Fins X 2 since its a 2 core Radiator so you have 88 Total

MK3 non Turbo Radiator
Length... 25 1/4" Long
Height... 15" Tall
Thickness... 1 1/4" Thick
Total Fins are 65 X 2 since its a 2 core Radiator so you have 130 Fins total
(Difference 21 Cooling fins than the MK2 Radiator)

MK3 Turbo Radiators
Length... 25 1/4" Long
Height... 15" Tall
Thickness... 1 1/4" Thick
Total fins are 71 X 2 since its a 2 core Radiator so you have 142 fins total
(Difference 6 More cooling fins that the Non turbo and 27 More than the MK2 Radiator)

Koyo AL MK3 Radiators
Length... 25"
Height... 14 3/4"
Thickness... 2 1/16"
Total Fins are 66 X 2 for 2 core radiator so you have 132 Fins total. Standard Price for this radiator is $399.00- $425.00
(Difference 1 Extra Cooling fin per row as the MK3 non Turbo but almost a 1" Thicker total Core Size)

Fluidyne Radiator (No Info Avaliable)

Griffin Radiator
Length...25 3/8"
Height...14.3/4"
Thickness...1 1/2"
Total fins are 58 X 1 since its a Single core raidator so you have 58 Fins total. It looks to be a pretty much stock radiator with the Exception that its AL and it has less fins then the MKIII non turbo Radiator and Definitely less that the turbo Radiator. Priced at $325.00 in the group buy It should be ok but Im thinking the MKIII Turbo or Non turbo Radiators will do just as well if not better. Its made to be a Direct Bolt on to the MKII Supports so the Dementions arent any Different.

CSF Radiator (No longer in Production)
Length... 25 7/16"
Height...14 3/4
Thickness...2 1/16"
Fins... 64 Fins x 2 for 2 Core so that leaves us at 128. Just a thicker Radiator it seems with the same fin count as the MKIII non turbo radiator.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
SO...I got my self a new stock (08/89-93) oem radiator and 8 liters of red toyota long life coolant, along with a new cap!
I said 08/89-93 cause both N/A and turbo A70's from 86 till late 89 used the same radiator (yes, the turbo used the N/A one)
So the 08/89-93 turbo radiator is part number 16400-42240 .

Along with a future carbon hood with air ducts I will keep my 2jz tt mk3
cool and happy :sarcasm:
I think a lot of contribution to that is the 2jz which doesn't generate that
much heat as the 7M :aigo:...After some fast driving (old 7M tuned to 400rwhp) I couldn't even touch the battery iron bracket or the ignitor...man
what a heat, but now with the jz I can even fondle the plastic cover of the
engine

Good info. I will have to provide the same info for this JVT radiator and see how it compares. I used the stock MKIII radiator with the other swaps and it never let me down.

I have one available I can pull from my '90, but it also has the ports for the auto tranny cooling lines. I was thinking that I would use it to replace my separate power steering cooler. Also, if I use this now, I'd eventually have to replace it to finish that swap. The cost for a replacement varies from about $130 (online/shipped), to about $245 (local parts stores). I don't even think I want to know what Toyota wants for one.

For the price of this aluminum one ($209.98/shipped), it'd be silly not try it. Still getting it cheap enough to where I can re-sell it and not lose $$ on it, if it does not work out.

Looking at the measurements shown in the auction, it looks to be 2.25" thick at the tanks, meaning that the core will likely not exceed 2" and will hopefuly be more at about 1.75", which looks like it will still leave me with about 1" between the fan and the surface of the core. Close either way, but maybe not as close as the other aluminum ones.

Give it a try...and if it fits ok than maybe I can get an aluminum one
in the near future. If the oem was from aluminum I would never change it...

If it doesn't work out, I'm going to seriously look into getting the stocker copied as an aluminum. I was thinking of going through Howe custom radiators, although it more than likely going to cost as much maybe more than a name brand aftermarket radiator.

Wasn't here Friday to sign for it, but got it today. Looks pretty decent (new stuff always does).

Won't get the head back from the machine shop 'til Wednesday, so hopefully installing and measuring this by the weekend.

Just getting done putting the head back on and getting things put back together. Gonna try to finish up tomorrow night. Will have picks/fitment to share afterwards.

Sorry, just had time this weekend and did a community Easter egg hunt deal with the kids today. Almost done tho... more to come.
