No shroud since I bought the car in May. w/BHG needle would stay 40% the way up. W/ new HG same thing also w/o the rad being completely filled needle never goes further than 40% up the guage. However thermostat, rad cap, water pump and rad r new also.

if youve still got remnants of the fan shroud, try epoxying it back into fan-shroud shape. then cover it with aluminum foil and use it as a mold to fiberglass. itll take some time but the whole thing will only run you about 35-40 bucks for the fiberglass mat and resin.

actually i just drove the car today again and i realized it was about 40% not 50% aiming down a bit more then half.

i put my temp probe on the upper nech of my radiator sliped under the end of the hose a little to get a somewhat accurate readong it read 175 after the car was ideling for abour 2 minuties, same place on the gauge.

heh fragile it is. also the fact that the gauge is ballpark at best and our cars working correctly is a little warm for my taste. i have a pic of a custom fan shroud a guy in canada made. lemme see if i can find it.

I come from a land down under
Dave: It's a 77c I think!

Cruise is right on the T Stat at about 75c and WOT for extended periods never goes over 90c!

I also run an electric Water Pump in series controlled by the ECU.

77c! wow thats like, um. 5/9, uh, carry the one, and uh take off the shoes, 170.6F if my hillbilly math is right.

90c would put it right at 195, which is the stock t'stat temp. see, and people think im crazy wanting my car to be <210 max.

too cool is bad of course, but looks like you are right around the area i'm shooting for.

This is why I got far away from the stock, thick as a sheet of paper radiator. Just like the stock IC, it has no leeway.

With my setup, I had my electric fan give out on me last week 40 miles from my house, with 95* temps outside. The fan was just "clunking" along (jumper wires in the motor came loose and were shorting out). I drove it home on the interstate going 60mph most of the way and then got into town with traffic lights, did not boost, and it never went past 200.

Normally, under heavy boosting, she will just past the 195 mark then drop right back to 190, this is with a 185 t-stat, one perma-cool 16" electric fan, and no shroud.

Edit: that is one cold t-stat Ian!

Exactly why I stay with the stock fan and shroud combo.

You may see that your temp gauge stay at the same temps and below half (40%), but the stock temp gauge is pretty slow to react when it gets more hot than normal. Read somewhere on the forum a couple years ago it could get 20 to 40°F( don't remember exactly) hotter than normal before the needle even start to move up from "normal" temp on the gauge.

I'm running 180° F thermostat, 15° cooler than stock, sounds about right, considering we got pretty cold temperature here in october and november( before I store my mk3), could have went with a 160° stat but I find this drastically colder. My temps looks good on the gauge about 35-40% max, but than again stock gauge...so... hehe

But u don't hear me though. I checked my rad today and did not even see any coolant at all. No problems w/excessive or high temps. Note outside temps not exceeding 73 degrees. Who said MK's run hot?:nono:

Oh yeah I did lol:icon:biglaugh:
