Radiator Fan Shroud dilema

so, my radiator fan shroud broke on me whille i was driving and i had to remove it. the dealer wants almost $200 for a new one, i cant find any good ones at the local junk yards and i cant find any in any for sale sections. is it safe to drive around with out the fan shroud? any suggestions?

You can do it temporarily, but I would get one ASAP...the car might overheat if it gets really hot out.

find a local toyota dealer that will give you a 20% shop discount.... tell them you have a repair shop, 1/2 the time they won't even ask for proof. if they do, go register a d/b/a for like $10 or whatever at your local city hall. it's well worth the time and effort to set up this type of account. i've probably saved $500 or more from my 20% toyota discount.

i bought a new fan blade and shroud from the dealer.... don't cheap out. i drove without it for 1 day and it did slightly overheat in slow moving traffic, so i stopped driving it and ordered right away. i considered getting dual fans and ditching the fan blade/clutch, but i read a lot of posts with people who were unhappy with their electric fan setups.

yah, i realy do want to get a fan shroud on but they're hard to find localy. i guess i'll have to order one.

ive been driving around for the past few months on my rebuild in as hot as 90-95degree weather and the temp nedle never moved past half. ull be fine

but it seems as though my fan is engaged a lot more than with the shroud on. and i can feel a drag in the motor when it is engaged, its kinda anoying. i can see why people would want to go with the electric fan set up.

I drove around in FL head w/ ac on without a shroud no problems... I finally put on on today and hopfully my ac will work better at stop lights, lol

Get a new fan shroud from Champion like isnms said, that's your best bet. For 100$ shipped it's a pretty good deal and no hasle. I wouldn't swap to electric fans, heard bad things about them. IMO The stock fan is pretty damn good, flowing alot of air. You hear the fan more cause you're probably running a bit hotter without the shroud causing the fan to run faster. Get a new one and your set.

LOL I was thinking the same thing!!

Normally when everything is cooling well your car should be around the 35-45% range.... just under the half way mark. 50+% is not good at all. When I drove without the shroud it touched around 55% or so and I stopped driving it.

for reference... when my stock temp gauge was at ~40% my water temps were 220+ degrees, (broken thermostat)

so I dont even want to know how high my temps would be if it were at 50%

granted that guage is incredibly inaccurate so what it was for me might not be the same for you... but get a shroud on there quick, it made a HUGE difference for me.

I've NEVER had a fan shroud on my Supra since I've owned it (over a year).

My temperature gauge, from the very bottom line (C), is about 30% of the way up...Yeah, it stays plenty cool for me.

with a stock radiator? that's very good.

i'm going to be replacing my rad with the PWR unit, hopefully that will lower my temps.

when mine got close 505 or so i was boiling water, but also didn't have pressure in the system due to hg leakin..

well after i put the shroud on its staying the same half just under half on the gauge. factory toyota thermostat on a fresh rebuild and a freshly cleaned and checked radiator. everything i put in my car waas either brand new or the stuff i was running that i had cleaned and checked.

its been running for the past 3-4 months with no problems (knock on wood)

next time i drive it ill put my temp probe on the top of the radiator, should be a good enough guess on what the water temp coming out of the engine is.
