I'm just curious. I'm new to the supra community. I just bought my '87 N/A 5spd about three weeks ago. It is entirely stock, for now. My problem is that I might have let my mouth over load what my car can do. I basically have now got a drag race set up with my boss. He has an '88 Corvette. It's an auto and he hasn't done anything with it outside of that. I'm just hoping that I'm not going to get spanked. Anyone have any ideas. I hope to have the cat gutted and a K&N equiped by race time.

LOL. Keep your mouth shut until you have turbo. Actually my car is currently NA Auto with exhaust and intake on a newer motor. I've killed 5.0 Mustangs, Camaro's, and have kept up real lose to a Vette. The Vette had about 3/4 of a car length ahead of me.

Hmm... Depends on how well he took care of that L98.

He should be sporting about 45 more hp than you, and something like 130 more lbs/ft of torque, in a lighter car....

Yeah, I see it working out well for you :p

I'd give him a run for his money, or atleast everything you have, but I would, in the end, let him win. Losing might instill some bad attitude in him about you...unless you know your boss really well. Sorta like the company golf outing...you let the execs win.

Hmm. May I ask what you have done to your N/A? Either these 5.0's, Camaro's & Vettes were complete junk or you have some serious power pushing through those 6 cylinders.

5.0's aren't fast, but they are for sure quick. Same goes with Camaro's unless they are V6's...

As for Mr. Corylee316, I'd say your chances are very slim. The Corvette's of that Generation are not the quickest...but they still back some power and lots of torque. If you had a stock TURBO Supra, you'd give him a good run, but N/A, I don't see it happening. Also, being Automatic N/A decreases your chances even more. If you were AUTO Turbo, You would be good to go!:icon_razz Otherwise, back out now and tell him you were joking about racing. ;)

A 1988 corvette only has 45 more horsepower than a NA supra. That sounds a little hard to believe. I've read other posts of yours in the past and you seem pretty smart. I would have figured an 88 corvette for about 300 horses. A NA supra for maybe 200. I'm not a corvette expert though.

I think you'll get your ass handed to you on a silver platter, but good luck all the same.......................lol

L-98 was 230hp or 245hp, I don't remember which :) NA Supra was 200.

Torque on the L98 in '88 was I believe 330lbs/ft.

Yep! Looked it up quickly - 230hp, 330 lbs/ft in the '88 L-98.

So he's giving up 30 hp and a BOATLOAD of torque to the TPI system ;)

Also, I don't give a rat's ass what anyone tells you. A stock TBI (throttle body injected) L03 305 in a Camaro or Firebird, IS NOT FAST.

The stock 3.1L V6 + 5 speed was faster than the TBI 305/automatic. High 16 second cars.

'Vette didn't see 300+ ponies again till the LT1 showed up to play... then it was the LT4, and LT5.

Have any of you SEEN an LT5 motor?

Anyways, Sorry. When I think of someone speaking of Camaro's, I instantly assume they are talking about 93+. Any of the Camaro's prior to that (aside from "old school" Muscle Camaro), they are all juuuuunk. :nono:

Well, im not familiar with older Corvettes, but for what its worth when my car was non-turbo 5 speed I raced my friends 98 automatic LS1 Camaro a bunch of times. I would always be a car ahead off the line, but after first gear he would just literally drive away from me, in the end he would easily have 4 or 5 car lengths on me.

After I swapped the turbo motor in, we were pretty much evenly matched, and if i got a really good launch I would end up ahead a car length or so. This was when he first got the car with around 70k miles on it, these days his transmission is dying of neglect, and he loses races to 1988 Yamaha Radians (or whatever those shitty things are called.)

:bsflag: the ls1 have 320 hp and and 345? lb ft. torque. and could run with the mkiv twin turbo supra. I had both a 4 th gen and 3rd gen supra both turbo. mk iv was stock, and my 3 gen had exhast and intake. needless to say mkiii couldnt touch my mkiv. therefore i dont think you could even hang with an ls1.

When I had the stock turbo running 12psi w/ exhaust and intake, I had at it with 1999 SS Camaro (LS1) and his front bumper was at my rear-quarter panel by 100mph or so. If you were running stock boost (6-8psi), I wouldn't doubt it that your MKIV would spank your MKIII.

MKIII's are so restricted, stock, that the littlest things will make it that much quicker. I won't call BS & I won't say anything is telling the truth/lying because EVERY car is different. As time goes, so does mileage, motor wear, tranmissions, etc.

No. The way I look at it and the way it should be looked at no matter what you drive.
16 seconds: Get outta here.
15 seconds: Slow.
14 seconds: Decent.
13 seconds: Quick
12 seconds: Fast
and so on. I simply don't care what people say. I go by those numbers.
Something like a stock 98 Z28 Camaro...That's like a mid to high 14 second car...You ride in it, it's got a lot of torque so it feels quick, but runs 14's. As above says, it's "decent".

:NINJA EDIT:

Stock LS1s are *slow*, but that's just my perspective. :p
Yes, WeDgE: If you are T78 powered, anything running slower than a 10 second quarter mile will be slow to you. ;);)

Just race him, and post the results. Don't be scared to lose. You can't get a hit every time, but go down swinging....................lol

 So basically you are telling him that when the Vette starts pulling away, ram into the side of him and don't let him win? :biglaugh:
