A manual rebuild can be done without any special tools, and is much simpler than an automatic. Just a thought. I think the repair manual is more than detailed enough.

um........i wouldn't make it out to be that easy. most guys don't have press, vice, variety of snapring pliers, bearing spliters, vblocks, large bench space, let alone the understanding/knowledege needed to do a successful rebuild. jusk like if some noob goes to rebuild a engine with out any experience. there are many details that if over looked the engine will fail. many that aren't layed out it the tsrm. for instance properly cleaning the bores with motor oil and paper towels till its just clean oil on the bores without any metal dust from honing. the same goes with transmissions.

to the op do some local research. what do other shops have to say about said tranny shops. find one thats busy.

What I said is absolutely correct. It isn't rocket science, is much easier to do than an automatic, and requires no special tools. We probably don't conisder the same things special tools.

Yah I'll just drop it off with the manual and parts haha, and ask for all the old parts back. I'll get the feeling if someones bs'n. I'd love to do it myself but the time and money on tools wouldn't be worth it for me.

sorry but i don't buy it. both the tranny and engine in my mk3 have been built by me. i have a good amount of experience though. to tell someone over the internet that rebuilding a transmission is something the average joe car guy can do is just misleading/

It's not hard if you have the tooling. But I'd rather give someone a few hundred bucks then spend it on tools that I got nowhere to put.

So bump to the original question.
