I was actually going to try to rebuild the r154 myself as well since I just bought one a few days ago. It was a 200 mile journey there and back but atleast I got it for 350 bucks. Apparently it has 67k miles on it with no grinds and was driven by an old lady. It's only really dirty because the engine had an oil leak. Iv'e done a couple automatic transmissions at school but never a manual.

I wouldn't rebuild it if there isn't anything wrong with it, especially if it was driven by a little old lady for only sixty seven thousand miles...........:biglaugh:

Here is the press that I am going to use. Also, I have the outer housings off and am probably going to start this weekend. Of course, I will have pics and semi instructions on another thread.

A couple more questions for you guys:

1: A couple of the counter shaft gears have very small chips in the teath. Should I replace the counter shaft and if so, who has one for me?

2: Should I use the gear oil I put in the transmission for assembly or use assembly lube (if assembly lube, what do you recommend)?

just use gear oil... I used bulk oil we had at the dealer.

Just replace synchro's bearings and thrust washers... i still got a reverse gear thrust washer I didn't use.

If the gears don't have large chips taken out of them you will be fine.

OK, I have a question for anybody that can answer. I am pretty sure of I know what to do, but just want to make sure. On the counter gear shaft, clutch hub #3 has two shift key springs. Do both springs go on one side of the clutch hub, or do they go one on each side? If they both go on one side, do they just stack on top of eachother or just touch ends together? (hope that makes since). I have a picture of where the TSRM says they go and then I have a pic of where the Toyota diagram has them go . Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

One pic shows the spring on each side and the other shows them on one side. I think they both go on one side but not for sure.

if its the paticular one you are working on do as the pic says. so if yours has 2 on one side and the pic is the same. Do it that way. IIRC there was one that had 2 on the same side. its just been sometime since I've done mine to remember.
