Hi guys. I just did a short 100 mile run this weekend and when I returned, I noticed my tranny making a whining noise. This was accompanied by my throw out bearing making quite a bit of noise also. Clutch in, no noise, clutch out, noise. It shifts fine; but, my concern is the whining noise. It whines in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th and it is pretty loud. 4th is oh so quiet. :icon_bigg

Aside from possibly being low on fluid, are there any other concerns...what kind of mileage are y'all getting out of your r154's?

The car is mostly stock with 116k.

Thanks for your ideas...

Take this with a grain of salt since its not the same car/tranny:

Well last time i had a whining noise in my car coming from a tranny was when i had a 91 geo prizm. As toyota made the mechanical pieces its at least somewhat similar standards wise.

Anyway....if it is like the whine i had, and these problems can be linked between cars (since they are quite different)....STOP DRIVING THE CAR IMMEDIATELY. I was driving and the car actually slipped out of gear and into park. Given manuals don't have park but maybe it could slip into another gear? The transmission was simply destroyed afterwards

I had a whining noise and it ended up being the center bearing on the drive shaft. I just ended up getting a 1 piece from Jaws Gear

That's a good idea. I'll change it this weekend. Speaking of that, can anyone confirm the amount of oil the tranny holds. 4 quarts comes to mind; but, not sure on that.

There is no 4th gear. It is 4th speed, which is direct drive, that means the input and output shafts are locked together, and it removes the load. The load makes noise in all gears, getting slighlty quieter as you upshift.

That noise is the input bearing dieing. It is also why don't have noise with the clutch disengaged(pedal in). No load.
