okay guys. my tranny is leaking on the bottom where the 2 halves meet. is it easy to take it apart and put new sealant or do i need to take it to a transmission shop and have them do it. any idea how much it is to rebuild, basically just replacing the thrust washer? tia?

Leaking what from where? Is it transmission oil or engine oil. You can tell if its transmission oil because after a few thousand miles it starts to stink. It smells nothing like engine oil. Also, transmission oil is a much higher viscosity.

If it is engine oil then your rear seal is bad and it will need to be replaced, which is a fairly big job.

If it is transmission oil, and it is coming out near the engine then you have a bad seal somewhere because that area is supposed to be dry. It might not need a full rebuild but if you are going to take it out and pay someone else to do it you might as well get it all done.

you have to pull the transmission out there a seal you need to replace where the shaft is behind the fork. kinda weird where that is leaking that might fix it might be coming from your valve covers leaking down to the transmission just a thought.

it's definitely tranny fluid. not coming from any sensors/plugs, not from rear seal of tranny. it's coming from the center section of the transmission, usually has the red sealant. this is where you can take the 2 halves apart to get to the gears...

Mine does this do although it's not so much as a good leak as a seeping problem. I imagine I'll pull it apart in the next week or so and get it fixed. But I'm like you and wonder if I need a new sandwich plate or sealant or what...

Just wanted to say that this isnt true at all :icon_bigg

Its similar to regular engine oil in viscosity. I'm not certain the specific use of bigger numbers to differentiate it from engine oil, but it does have its own standards to follow.

Notice the similarities between the crankcase and gear oils, but that the gear oils just have higher numbers
