yeah the bearing retainer for the input shaft bearing is pretty beefy so no need for a mc replacement. and the bearing itself is about the size of a hocky puck. lol. that why i don't see how it could bust.

Ok just getting around to pulling the tranny but I heard another sound, at idle there is a thumping sound like something is hitting something. I can feel the beat of the noise in the clutch slave cylinder its weird. Also found the shifter bolts were all loose but I assume the noise would increase if that was the noise I'm hearing and its sounds like its coming from deeper in the tranny.

My trans sounds like a very tiny wheat grinder in neutral at idle and hums a bit in 1st and 2nd. It recently started popping out of 1st gear on occasion. Engine and trans are out, and the trans is getting rebuilt or replaced while it out. It drove fine, but I won't put it back in.

I'm not sure what the gearing is on the R154 and what engine mods you have but are you sure it's the tranny? I know in my W58 - GE, 4.30:1 in the rear that range would definitely cause the engine to lug.

I'm just asking, you did say chattering though which makes me think this isn't the problem. Just want to rule out the easy things first, could you describe what you mean by chattering?

And to clarify, this is in all gears? You go through the 12-1500RPM range in all gears?

i wouldn't call poping out of first driving fine, but yeah i bet you have the same problem just about every r154 is going to have. massive wear like i was saying causing too much play. i say just rebuild it. a used one is just going to do the same shit eventually especially if you making any power.

I'm not getting a used one or rebuilding it, I'm looking to fix the current problem. Like I said, I don't have the time to build a tranny right now but I do plan to for the future.

Yes it makes the noise in all gears.

Found it, and holy crap, 4 of the 6 flywheel bolts were loose and 3 were coming out! I remember putting some sort of silicon loctite on those I just don't remember, but I do remember torquing them to spec which is probably too little because they are upgraded and bigger ARP bolts..

never looked, thats why i asked. scary!

to clarify your symptoms, any amount of throttle (light or heavy) would cause the shudder when passing through 12-1500 rpms?

More than likely a harmonic that caused it to shake at that RPM.

I only use red loctite on those bolts, have to use an impact to remove em, but they won't back out.
