Finally got around to bringing the cressida into a shop to get some advice and see what can be done.

Because the 3" in the cressida is so tight, it leaves very little room for any improvement. The only thing they are thinking to do is go with a different muffler and drop the pipe to 2.5" just before the muffler.

Any thoughts

Performance is going to suffer, 2.5 is alittle restrictive.

I guess it depends on HOW MUCH which really will play a role in the decision process.

They're advocating do just a small section which will have the drop down from 3" to 2.5" then a larger muffler.

Here is the muffler i was looking at:
http://vibrantperformance.com/catal...id=52&osCsid=4a16589a78e66816f61cae7b4e155bfc

It seems like it would be quieter then what i currently have b/c of its larger size, plus it would help with the sleeper effect.

The Tanabe Super Hyper Racing Medallion exhaust I have on my Supra 1J is actually pretty quiet until you romp on it. Before this exhaust I put an Apexi ATS in my N1 muffler and it worked really well. I was supprised the spring load was as accurate as it was and here again for daily crusing it's quiet but when you go WOT it give's you almost the same exhaust sound as without a silencer with no real noticable drop in power. For $125.00 it's worth a try. I agree that 2.5 might be a bit performance degridating and you might be sorry.

Brand doesn't have a whole lot to do with quitening down the exhaust. Get what ever brand you like just make sure you get an offset-offset or centre-offset. Its the offsetting that will remove most of the noise form a 1J. Past that its internal design, If you can a straight through offset-offset glass packed muffler will give you low noise and power.

It is EXTREMELY possible to have a zero loss exhaust that is also quite, its just with smart choices. If I were you I would make a 3" fit, there are alot of brands out there, there should be one that has a low barrel hight to fit with your tight clearences. If not, you only need two extra cuts and welds to angle the system down slightly to make extra room. The shop saying it wont fit is them just being lazy :p

OH I previously had the Blitz NUR I have just pulled it for a system I built. For those interested the power difference between having the silencer in and no silencer was 45rwkw! thats 60rwhp on a back to back run on a dyno. Lesson? if you don't want a load exhaust make a good flowing quite one, DON'T run a loud one with a silencer :p

PS my blitz is currently for sale for those of you in Australia! :D

I think the resonator and muffler from vibrant would do the job, the never ending problem is clearance. The cressida seems to be much different then a supra in that things are much tighter with a 3" exhaust already in place.

The last suggestion the shop had was to redo the whole exhaust with 2" (minimum $800 bucks). No thanks. I'd like to quiet things down a little but not at such a large expense of $$ and power.

If anyone has suggestions for something like this, please make them.

I'll be the first to admit i'm ignorant with exhuast systems on these vehicles and need the most help possible.

thanks

How do you mean? advise on making a zero lose setup or on a muffler that will fit?

If you after a fitting muffler, jump on jegs, they have heaps of mufflers listed along with their measurements. Squeeze under the car with a tape measure and see how much room you doo have or what can fit.

I personally like the look of the Cherry bomb vortex mufflers, I probably would of dropped one in my setup if I could get them in Australia :p Although they do seam to be a bit louder then a standard offset-offset straight through. But they are a slim fit which is good. I think magnaflow have decent sized ones too.

You first por twould be to work out how much space you do have, either by replacing one already there on adding one in a decent length of straight piping. AND don't be intimdated by it being an 'exhaust' its just a bit o piping wioth some boxed whacked in. Thing of it as drain pipe if it makes it seam easier :)

Yup that magna flow looks alrgiht, just make sure its straight through AND that you have a stainless steel setup :) 4" tall its a good height and I have heard good things about the magna flows.

No on teh gibson, its a full 8" diameter, so it will be 2" taller then the magnaflow, which wont help ground clearance.

UNLESS you have ground clearance but need space on the sides, in which case the former is better :)

See why you need to go measure ;) :D

if you could get a muffler shop to make you some 2.5" twin dumps all the way back joining in the end with a twin inlet muffler, you can run 2 cats and 2 mid-mufflers. you'd get a quiet system with better flow than a single 3" and no droning. I did this on my cressida without the cats, just the three mufflers.
