Well, I did some in-depth reading here on SM and pulled the trigger on a few things. I decided to buy some NGK plugs, NGK wires, and a K&N FIPK, and will do my work tomorrow when the sun is shining (no garage to work with, FTL!). Since I'll be doing the plugs, I also bought a compression test meter with the screw-in piece and will do that with everything disassembled to check my engine integrity (next week I will also pick up a coolant/exhaust kit to check that out as well since I know my rad leak check passed its test. Hopefully it'll stay nice and blue...). I also did due-diligence and printed out all the tech work from here on everything from the coil firing order, removal of the 3000, and other related parts, and the detailed faq on DIY compression test, but I still have a few questions.

1: When it comes to getting the engine temp to "operating levels", do I just turn her over and idle for 5-10 mins., or do I actually jump in and ride around the block for awhile? I imagine idling should be sufficient.

2: How hot roughly will the engine components be when I start to pull everything off? I'll be using mech gloves as necessary to do this but I don't want to grab the 3000 pipe and have it adhere to my hands as I'm working.

Op temp is 190-200 degrees for coolant. One that's there your good to go.

As far as how hot things get the motor will get to approx 200 degrees. Unless it's exhaust it won't be much hotter then that. Mechanix cloth gloves should be sufficient.

All done with the test, here are my results...

1: 150
2: 150
3: 150
4: 150
5: 152
6: 152

A little low since the engine cooled some when I was removing the 3000 pipe and other piping, but well within specs. The engine had ZERO issues with cranking, and the old plugs looked in great condition, no buildups, scoring, etc. Now I'm running with NGK wires and plugs, and once the ECU catches up to what I did, I should be golden. :icon_bigg

Sounds like a healthy running 7M, good catch matey!

Just curious, what plugs are you running? I've got my 1JZ disassembled for the winter and have to do plugs come spring (the HKS ones that are in there look like they're been in there since new lmao!) I'm stuck between the NGK's or just getting a replacement set of Hella eKspensive Stuff plugs like the ones that were in there.

Hmm, so begins the arguement of platinum vs. iridium vs. coppers lol

I've got a 1JZ in my car so I don't have plug wires, the 1J's have individual coil packs.
