OK so here's the question, Should I buy a motorcycle or not?

here's the situation:
Selling my Supra, as early as today. Going to pay off my credit card and put some of the money back for my honeymoon, and put the rest toward a cycle.
it's an 06 Honda CBR600RR, 5k miles, yosh exhaust, black & beautiful. Getting it with tax/everything else and extended warranty (4 years and 6 months) for $7500. I believe it booked for like $8500 or something.

Anyway, before i even began to THINK about actually getting it, I asked my fiance if it was cool. Yeah, she was all about it, excited, all around just "go for it". So I looked into insurance and a loan. Insurance will be like $210/year (full coverage) and payments will be less than $150/mo. So I ask my dad about it, and he agreed that it wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm 90% sure I'll be doing a lot of work commute (Indy to Columbus) so there's quite a bit of gas money to be saved (let's face it, Supras aren't all that awesome on gas and, well, I like the boost. :icon_surp ) Plus, I should be getting something like a $3k sign on bonus and make like $20/hr or so. Worste case, I end up in a Dr's office making $14/hr w/o the bonus. Still a shit ton more than I'm making now, or have ever made. And even with the... 12-16hrs i work a week, it wouldnt be a problem to swing the payments. Mowing will start back up in a few weeks so theres another 4-500/month. hell, worste case, I get it, ride it for a few months, decide I can't keep it and sell it for what I owe and a little. Shouldn't be too hard I wouldn't think.

anyway, why I'm asking. I asked her last night if she was OK w/ it and I got the "I dunno, you just do what you want to do and I wont get mad"... I'm told that's a "you do that and Ill rip yer nuts off" kinda thing. But then again, I've got a grand total of $4500 student loans that I need to pay back whereas she's approaching the $40k mark... Doesnt bother me, I'm not saying I should get it simply because she's in more debt than I... she's going to be making a shit ton of money for me down the road.

lol, I'm bored and just curious what everyone thinks.

Cliff notes:
I want a bike, GF wanted it to.
she changed her mind, and gave me the choice to get it.
wtf?

*edit*
I just got an e-mail saying I was approved for the loan on my own at 22... Eff I feel really good now!

Hey Matt, congrats on the marriage and the new job..............::w00t::

First of all, I'm not financially smart so I shouldn't be answering this question, but I like Matt, and thought I'd throw in my two cents worth.

I wouldn't suggest you buy a bike, but only because I have two friends that had them. One is dead and the other has no right leg. I know you can get in an accident and die while in a car too, but I just think people don't see motorcycles. When I get behind one, I pay extra attention because I know if I hit them then it's not just going to be a dent in a bumper for them. Both of my friends accidents happened because someone didn't see them coming and pulled out right in front of them. You do what you want, and I would love to have a bike if I knew I wouldn't get run over by someone half asss'd paying attention while driving, but I have two girls and a wife and I'm not willing to risk it.

As for the lool. You know whether or not she wants you to get it. It's entirely up to you if the bike is worth having an arguement over. You're the one that has to see her everyday and put up with the look. Luckily my wife lets me do pretty much anything I want to do. I know right from wrong so I don't do anything to get myself in trouble, but if I went and bought a bike tomorrow, she would love it and not say anything bad to me. Good luck with your choice and just do what you feel is right...............lol

^ I'm a firm believer in me going when it's my time whether I'm on a bike, in a car, an airplane, or sitting at home watching TV eating cheesy poofs.

I just talked to her for like 35 mins about it and she's back to the 'go for it. we're only going to be young and half-way responsibility free once'

Also, I think when I'm on a bike I'm a 'better driver'. Not better as in, 'hey look at me I'm doing dorriftos...' better as in, 'oh hey look, there's a car on a sidestreet... they're going to pull out in front of me'. I think if you have a bike you have to think like that all the time. Had my cycle liscense since i was 16, been riding bikes every summer since. 2 close calls (been into a median @ highway speeds due to a driver not paying attention, and into a ditch on a country road around a corner at like 45mph due to me not paying attention...) neither time was I hurt nor was the bike, if thats not proof it wasn't my time, I don't know what the hell else I should be looking for.

It's not your driving that I was worried about, it was your life.........:icon_bigg

Good luck with your bike though, and keep both eyes on the idiots around you.

eh.. you only live once.

however personally i would avoid taking out a loan to buy it. i am probably not very qualified to make this statement but i think a "financially smart" person would tell you not to spend money you dont have.

if you want the bike, save up and dont take out a loan.

Should you buy a bike? No. Mileage? Get a used Jetta Diesel, or Civic.

^ absolutely nothing to do w/ mileage.... But that was a damn good argument.

I just decided to get it. And I agree 100% about the loan and spending money I dont have, but this should help boost my credit for when I go to buy a house.

Yes you do only live once, but you dont want to end it early especially since youre getting married. Try not to be too selfish and think about your future with your wife. About the debt, I also agree not to buy something you dont have money for, but a vehicle and a home are 2 things where this theory can be stretched. My past (10 yrs ago) really structured how I live today. I was in crazy debt...about $27,000 and I was up to my neck in interest only payments and calls from the collectors daily. It was a miserable time in my life.
I eventually buckled down and consolidated the debts and paid them off rather quickly. Its amazing what can be done once you put a little effort into it.

This was all done at the right time cuz as soon as I paid it off, I bought a house and they said that they wouldnt have approved the loan with a large debt like that even tho I make a good living. Also, you inherit her debt once you marry her. I for one would have a problem with this, and would work it out prior to the marriage but every person has their own opinion on subjects like this.

So I would find some median to your situation. Find a reasonable car that will keep you happy and alive.

buy a honda. 35mpg in the city and when you get in an accident, (it will happen eventually), you have a MUCH better chance of surviving. plus, why get a loan on a bike? it can't fit more than 2 people, you cant haul anything, dangerous, and i think it's irresponsible in your situation.

spend 3k on a reliable daily driver.
