And +/- 5%? That's freaking ridiculous. You get more than that filling up the fuel tank. What happens if I have a full tank and two fatties in the back seat? When people make up stupid rules that can't work in the real world, I find a way around them, rather than try to conform. Like install an electric exhaust cutout for when I want performance, and use a stock exhaust the rest of the time. Or get it certified with the tank dead empty... or if that doesn't work, lift the car back up, then drop it as soon as it passes to whatever height I want. If I get caught on it, I'd go before the judge and say it was the extra fuel ... or that I was carrying cinderblocks in the hatch ... or dispute the police ruler. Or something.

Just one of the joys owning a modded car in the Southern Hemisphere Dave, the entire scene has been ruined for everyone buy a handful of simple fools that equate a car sitting on bumpstops = lowered....

Cars/Motorists are an easy target and a great source of revenue for useless wasteful governments..

As for "get it inspected then change it" bzzzzz

There's a case before the courts at the moment where someone got street rod registration with an N/A SBC then a few days later hit a pole and killed both occupants, somehow the car grew a Blower in between....

Things are only going to get worse here with each incident.

Ah read your first post wrong... So 2 smaller pipes would give the same flow, but how much difference would having 1 smaller pipe at the back make if the rest of the system was say 3"? Seems a lot easier and I only have until 5th Aug to get it done. Will see if I can find that system tho

Who are you taking it to cert?? when i saw JAKE SNOOd he seemed pretty understanding there is also an exhaust shop about 6 shops down form him so it could be easy to back and forth between those to to come up with a solution some times they are able to bend some rules.

like your car is ment to be under 90db some one I know went to SNOod his was like 98db so back and forth changing mufflers still only got it down to about 94-5db and then he certified it at that level so its leagal to run over.

im sure there is pleanty of lotus 7's ect that are lower than 100mm

my cat back is 3.5" so I personaly cant go too low myself you7 can arge ect that it was tested on new suspension and its a bit older now and sagged and more fuel ect ect my mates one in aussy is so low that the exhaust smacks the cats eyes on the road im sure there just as anal over there it depends on how and where you drive too i guess

I'd be haunting the local government parking lots, hitting up their springs with a propane torch until they were in trouble with the law themselves. Or bolting on extra bits that stick down too far. Or filling their passenger compartment with CEMENT.

Probably NOT a good idea to post this on an open forum....

I ended up building a custom system here that flowed 550rwhp @ 88Db while being tucked up and legal.

basicly what I was saying they slapped a blanket rule down for all cars even though its not neccacerly possible to apply these to all cars so the inspector has a "little" bit of leway he is alowed to give at his own discression provided you have tryed to fix it and you can only get it so close to there requirement and more importantly it is safe! (this is my understanding tell him you read this he will prob say im full of it but if you seem like a nice respectable person and not a tool people are willing to try help you find solutions)

My point is if someone in authority see's this posted you may not have access to a tame inspector, it's happened here many times over the years.

Don't for a second think because SM is USA based no officials browse it. :(

What about cars that sit that low from the factory? Lotus 7's for sure, I KNOW that some Ferarris are at the least that low...

Took it to Wayne Martin. Failed on no battery clamp, too loud (he never measured so not sure what reading it is) and too low (though he never said anything about the undercarriage/exhaust). Also had to go for a wof to be able to get cert and it was the wof place that picked up on the undercarriage, mainly exhaust. And now me being a lazy ass only have just over a week to get final inspection on cert otherwise I have to pay the $380 again.

Could possibly get cert with a couple of decibels over or a few mm too low, but when it comes to the cops, if they want to do you for something they will. I had a mate who had his car certed for whatever ride height (quite low) but was pulled over by a cop and even tho his height matched that on his cert plate, was green (or pink?) stickered for undercarriage not being 100mm.

I was reading this going what the hell.. then, I noticed you're from NZ and suddenly everything managed to fall together (knew a guy that imported his car there and had some issues with ride height etc). IJ's right though, this is likely an easy form of income for the government in your area.

Took it down to exhaust shop today again, booked in for Monday. Decided to go 2 1/2". Also 2 1/2" resonator (only has the one) instead of 3". What will this do performance wise? The rest of my exhaust system is only 2 1/2 or 2 1/4 and is nothing flash. Hopefully I should get a good 30mm+ clearance from it and should be a bit quieter. $300 however... Oh well, cheaper than being done by the police.

If the restriction becomes a problem, an electric cutout that exits prior to the reduced size will fix it.

<nodding> They're just a little slow to react, I think it's SP that do a boost actuated one that should be instant, add in a solenoid triggered by a Hobbs switch and you have an on demand free flowing exhaust that's quiet the rest of the time.

Thought I'd better update. Before and after pictures included (also height of car).

They measured noise before and after. 99dB on old exhaust. 95dB on new. Legal limit here is 90 or 92 I think, but I can apparently get it certed at 95.
