Hey guys I'm getting ready to do my first rebuild ever and need a little help. I would like to know whats the cost I would be looking at for parts and machine work. Also when I take the parts to the machine shop is there anything that I should know to tell the shop. For example proper piston to cylinder wall clearance etc... What all would you recommend getting done while the engine is there to do the rebuild right? What parts would you buy for the rebuild?

I currently have an engine that I bought that I took apart to start my rebuild and it already has JE pistons .40, eagle rods, new head, new cams, new 6m crank, new oil pump, new freeze plugs etc.. The guy I bought it from thought that the engine was shot but it ended up being the exhaust side valve seals. So I have a start already. Thanks

well if the block is already built I would recommend leaving that. Besides you don't want to go much over .040 over bore on these blocks.
Just build the head, port/polish oversize valves and cams and springs depending on how much you want to rev too.

Well I've been told that since the guy was unable to provide me with any info on the machine work that was done to the engine I should just use a different block since its been bored .40 over already to insure proper piston to cylinder wall clearance . Plus I have two extra blocks

I have been doing some reading while waiting on replies and found that 4 thousands is the maximum piston to cylinder wall clearance for JE pistons. So at minimum the block will need honed correct? I guess the only reason that I was really thinking of going with the other block is because it is 89+ and has never had any machine work done. The one that I purchased was pre 89. I have been reading that the 89+ block is a stronger block. Is this right? What would you do? Since the these parts are used should I get them inspected to make sure that they are good? Crank, head, JE pistons, and eagle rods etc.. I am very new at this, so forgive me. You might have to translate on what to do in first grade English for me. LOL
