Hi Guys,

I have a question, you can maybe answer m. A friend of mine who also has a 91 MKIII 7MGTE has too high oil consumption. His engine needs about 3 or 4 liters per 1000km. He already changed the turbo more than once, and that doesn't seem to be the problem. He also removed the spak plugs, and the all have a healthy color. He also had the compression checked, and it seems to be fine. Because he couldn't figure out what the problem is, he deregistered his car, and took it of the road, and now wants to safe up to rebuild the engine, but i don't think it is realy necessary, because the eingine otherwise it not in bad condition, not too many km, and never seen more than stock pressure. The headgasket was replaced already and so where the valve seals. We wondered what else it could be. He believes the oilrings of the pistons are damaged, but if it were so, then the spark plugs would not have the normal healthy color, but would be black from burning the oil. What other possibles causes are there?

Thanks a lot guys

Mark

3 litres every 1000km is 1 litre per tank of gas. That will leave marks on the ground, but not puddles. First thing I'd look for is leaky valve cover seals.

Next, pull one of the PCV hoses and check for excessive blowby. That will usually cause some ugliness, if there is, pull off the upper IC pipe and check for oil inside the pipes.

if your losing that much oil there should be some obvious signs as to where it is going. have him run it for a while and look for blue smoke out of the tailpipe. if its clean and smells clean then check the two hoses on the top of the valve covers for any leeking into the spark plug galley and onto the block, it could be trickling down the exhaust side like mine is right now and just burning off of hte exhaust manifold. slow enough to not be noticed.
just my 2cents.
