I'm leaking oil pretty bad. Figured out its coming from a metal pipe leading to the turbo (or from the turbo). I hosed it off and didn't see any leaks so I just got a new gasket. Should be a pretty easy job but I haven't had a ton of experience doing work myself, any tips or advice for a noob?

To do that gasket you'll have to either fight with those hard lines from underneath or you're going to have to pull the turbo. They definitely weren't one of my highlight moments in doing my rebuild. I had the same problem though, replaced the gaskets, and everything was good.

The return line isnt that bad its the feed line with those damn copper crush peices of crap. sorry. but Id take the turbo off to make sure you get all the gasket off before putting a new one on.

I'd say tale it off for a better job quality, not to sy that you won't do a good job but you see how much of a pain that is

Anyone know of a thread explaining how to remove the turbo? I've taken off the bov and piping and unplugged all the hoses and wiring harnesses so it should be free. Now I need to unbolt the whole thing from the exhaust? or is there somewhere in the middle I can disassemble it instead.

TSRM Link to turbo removal:

This sets it out pretty nice and simple. I have a BIC ddp on my setup, so I just pulled off the whole half attached to the turbo when I pulled mine. I didn't pull the water pipes off the top, and I actually pulled the turbo leaving the oil pipes attached to the block. I undid the two nuts that hold the flange with the two lines to the turbo and it worked out ok. I've been told it's easier to pull them off the block first, but it DOES work to just undo those nuts too.

i would recommend investing in the soft line kit, makes the oil lines a breeze when you need to remove the turbo, not to mention you can correct seal the lines on both ends (block and turbo) before actually installing the turbo. I tried new gaskets 4 times with old line and could not get it to seal for the life of me.

suprasport are the ones i got work great no leaks.

Yea the steel braided ones are nice and no leaks, i got the one
from driftmotion but i really dont reccomend it, the flanges
they gave were off quite a bit and i had to do a little machine
work for them to fit, and ive seen a few other threads about people
have the same problem.

Also while installing its way better if you have 2 people, since the
line is somewhat short you gotta hold the turbo then screw the red/blue
adapter on which is a pain. And trying to bolt the turbo on then put the
soft line kit on is almost impossible as the line doesnt want to bend
too easily.

Figured i would just give my 2cents on the subject =]
