Question about Chevron Techron

Has anyone ever used Chevron Techron to flush out their injectors and fuel tank? I wanted to use a bottle because I don't have $50 to flush my injectors professionally. Has anyone tried it? What were your results? Any change in performance, any change in mileage?
Thanks for your help!

My dads owns a Chevron station and uses Techron on most of the cars he uses. It really work even on a performance cars, I used it in my Supra before the wreck. Also i saw an article in Super Street or some tuning mag that had good opinions about fuel cleaner and Chevron Techron was on there.

Techron is in reality about 40% polyether amine, one of the most effective injector and valve deposit cleaners known. Chevron invented the stuff and their Oronite Division is the world's largest producer. It's in their gas too.

PEA can also be found in RedLine SI-I and GumOut's Regane product, the yellow liquid in the clear bottle. Both have about the same percentage PEA as does Techron. You'll pay more for this stuff because PEA is more expensive to produce than the cheap and mostly useless solvent based cleaners found in auto parts stores.

Well, it is supposed to be the most effective out of all the magic fuel additives.

That being said, its nowhere near the same as using a cleaning machine like all the companies use.

LOL, I guess thats what you get for having a tab open for several minutes... 2 people post in front of you without your knowing.

Use GumOut Regane myself every 5K miles or so. I also believe the highest percentage of polyether amine is in the Techron concentrate.

Yeah, the PEA content of Techron is somewhat fuzzy but that's the accepted belief. I'm a Regane and SI-1 guy myself. One nice thing about PEA is how smoothly it can make an engine idle. Makes the exhaust smell sort of odd too. Just remember if you had a bad idle it may come back on the next tank ;)

Care to explain why that happens?

I'm not sure Jonathan. I suspect it may have to do with the carrier. After all, the bottle isn't 100% PEA. I think Regane uses kerosene but I don't know what the carrier is in SI-1 or Techron.

I only know people rave about how good the stuff is "working" but are surprised when the misfire or other idle problem comes back on the next tank. It's because nothing in a bottle will fix a real problem. Many of the snake oil cleaners use the same approach to fool people, the difference is PEA actually works. Have a look at Oronite's website for more info: http://tinyurl.com/y8v5ad

So then, I have always used Chevron Supreme w/Techron (the 91, its the highest in my area) on the Supra - "always" meaning it has never seen anything else since I've owned it. Does this have similar effects, or is it more of a marketing thing?

The same chemical is in the gas Chad just in a smaller concentration. If you've used Chevron all along that's a good thing. The odds are your fuel system is clean so you don't need to buy any of the PEA products. Course, any money you saved (and then some) was pissed away by the completely unnecessary use of 91 in a stock Supra ;)

Heh, I know, the 91 is overkill. One of those OCD things. It's only a few bucks difference a fill up tho, so its not like I'm wasting a ton of money on it.

But thats good to know on the gas, I wasn't sure if it was in such a small concentration it was worthless and thus just a marketing ploy, or if it really was enough in there to keep things fairly clean. Good to know!

Hold on now. Most of the major fuel companies use PEA. Many even buy it from Oronite. They just can't call it Techron. You can also buy cheaper gas and just add a bottle twice a year. But OK, since I own Chevron stock feel free to splurge ;)

SOPUS (Shell Oil Products US) owns GumOut so what do you suppose they use in V Power? As I said, nobody has really come up with something better and Chevron makes more money by selling it (or licensing it's manufacture) than by keeping a monopoly on it. Since they developed the stuff they just have a marketing advantage.

In case you guys didn't know this there are only a few fuel pipelines in the US. Most of the fuel you buy is the same stuff until it gets to the tanker truck. It's only there each company adds in it's own additive package.

One thing I forgot to mention about Techron. Chevron has another product called ProGuard. It's a cheaper watered down version of Techron with a much lower concentration of PEA. Don't waste your money. And as I said GumOut Regane and Redline SI-1 are the same stuff and you can often get better deals on them.

As good as some snake oils may be - I would save your money and buy a replacement set of injectors (if youre running stock, then you would buy another stock set). Then, have them sent off to R/C engineering.

I just used GumOut in my worn Geo, and it noticably helped smooth out the idle, even after the tank drained. I definately will continue to use it in the future. Maybe I should go get discounted Techron from my fellow Chevron owner... :naughty:
