Q's about a 5spd tranny shifting?

OK so I'm currently looking at a white 89' 5spd
i searched but couldn't find exactly an answer i wanted.

the car runs really go for original engine! The guy wasn't sure if it was the original tranny or if it was rebuilt?

So when i was driving it after it got warmed up, it was a little harder to get it to go into second! all the other gears were easy to shift into.

anyone know why this is? whats wrong with it?

Sounds like the syno's. Have you checked the clutch for proper end play?

It's in the TSRM. You are suppose to have x amount of play until you feel something solid when you push in the clutch.

Another thing, when was the last time you changed the fluid? Or checked it? A good grade tranny lube may make a difference, may not. Depends on how many missed shifts from 1st to 2nd. Check out the Oil and Lubicants section, Jdub has a lot of good info in there.

From the sounds of it he still has yet to buy this car... I doubt he's changed the gear oil. But, yeah, that could make all the difference.

The guy said that it tranny oil was changed about 100miles ago, i had a look at it for my self it look new.

Teeth on the synchronizer for second are roughed up a bit. Probably from hard shifting, and grinding it in(clutch not fully disengaged). Pretty common with standards in sports cars for second to be a little abused. It gets the most force applied to it, and is the fastest gear to shift.

Pull it and have a tranny shop rebuild it.

I'd try the Redline oil first, and shift easy, making sure the clutch is fully disengaged(no racing, or hard shifting for a while). This will help the trans. last a while, and allow you to save money for a rebuild. Have a pro. put new synchro's in second. As a matter of fact, Toyota sells an upgraded 2nd gear assembly for the w58 that comes with the synchro. I looked for the receipt so I could give you a part number, but its been a few years since I did mine.

You could attempt it yourself, but it requires a press to get the gears off and back on again. There's a few springs and bearings that have to be placed correctly, and a lot of little clips. It's cheaper in the long run to have it built at a reputable shop. They'll be cheaper if you pull it yourself and take them the trans cleaned and empty(no fluids).

I'm still thinking about getting the car! If i do then i will just start off with a tranny rebuild. My buddy said that he would do it for me for $50+price of parts.Where car i get parts to rebuild the tranny.

Most of the parts I'd get from the dealer. Champion/Jay Marks in Houston will give you a good deal. They're in the Misc. Vendors Section. If you are gonna get it rebuilt, you should get your buddy to pull the housings, and check everything first. Then you can order the parts you need all at once, with no surprises. Get the gasket kit as well.

If your buddy works for a shop, tell him to try Mac's Standard.

Gear, 2nd and the ring. They're labeled. Print that page, and take it to the dealer with you. They don't offer the old gear assembly any more, just the upgraded one.
