so i tore down my trans that i got with the new shell i got over the summer(i ran it for a couple months. then in second the shifter would walk about a 1/2" when i let off. plus it was making a wierd vibration/rattle noise but it would leave in 4th) i was sure it was the counter shaft bearing or thrust washer. so i pulled it and put in my old trans. anyway i split the case down to just the intermediat plate and the whole gear set together still. i went to check the fifth gear thrust clearence and the whole counter shaft moved back and forth about 1/4" or more. so i figured my thrust washer was crushed. it wasn't. my question for the wise supra guys on here is should the counter shaft walk that much? if it shouldn't what will close that up? here is a pic of the counter shaft and thrust washer. also is that the way it's supose to go on there?

sounds like a blown bearing race....and is the metal blue from heat on that end of the shaft??? If so my bet is the bearing that's on that part of the shaft.

And nothing should move 1/4" in a transmission...thats nuts!!

there is no race on the rear bearing. it rides on that journal on the coutershaft between first and the thrust washer, but it looks perfect. i'm going to mic it out and see but i doubt its out of spec. i need to know where exactly you measure the thrust clearence. also i didn't check how the countershaft moved with the center case still on there while the front bearing had its snap ring and plate over it. i think i'm going to reassemble it and check. the tsrm doesn't say anything about checking how much play the countershaft has with just the tailshaft housing cover off. i don't see why they don't have you check that, but after taking it appart that seems like something you would really want to know. especially in my case. i know i'm going to figure it out. just some help wouldn't hurt.

well...............................................i think i found me problem. lol.

time for new 1st gear. these thing are actually pretty easy to work on. i have worked on quite a few t5's and r-154 isn't that much more difficult. here is a pic of my dads 240sx tranny i'm fixing to. snaped output shaft.

oh yeah. its fine for the countershaft to move back and forth that much while the center case is off. the front bearing retainer and snapring stops that play when assembled. i can't wait until get to drive my car with a freshly rebuilt tranny. also for people that were curious the 5th gear thrust clearence is measure directly between the thrust washer and the gear itself. it has nothing to do with how much the countershaft moves.

i guess i'm the guy i was looking for when i asked this post now. lol.

I still think internal wear and play allow enough play to impact on the thrust washer and shatter it...

Straight cut gears would solve it, but so would going through and checking every spec...

Still in the middle of blueprinting my own :) Very nice work! Good call on the MC bearing retainer - I noticed a bit of wear on my stocker ;)

Is that the new MC bearing plate? They have a new one now that's even stronger than their old one...

And gloves are for sissies :D
