i have a weird problem with my winter beater. i have power steering at idle up to about 2100rpm after 2100 it goes stiff like there is no belt on it.

the pump and the rack are original to the car, the lines are new, full of fluid and no leaks, slight wining noise at idle and it stays the same at full rpm (does not get louder or change pitch). it did not do this with the original motor but after the swap it now does. the pump has two lines on a sensor just like the supra pump? what do they do, could reversing them cause this?

im at a loss, could it be a pump issue? i have another one, but they are a real pita to get at. it kinda makes the car jittery at a throttle blip or downshift.

the car is a 91 gt 5spd with a 89 3sfe in place of the original 5sfe and is running on stock(5s) manifolds and ecu/harness

any ideas or is this just a quirk i have to live with?

It has a vacuum switch on it like the MK3 PPS pump?

You probably have the lines hooked up backwards, try that and see what happens

also, if it whines, it's probably on its way out, and could mean that it's cavitating over 2,000rpm making no assist power.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to check the filter screen, either. Maybe try pulling the reservoir and backflushing it to remove any debris that's trapped on the screen.

system was backflushed and cleaned when the engine was installed 400 miles ago, will try swapping the lines on the vac switch tomorrow and see what it does.
