I used Brake Cleaner, Kerosine, Engine Brite Engine Degreaser and water to clean my engine bay. It just takes time and worked better than using anything with acid.

After washing my engine bay, I took an air blower and cleaned every plug since I disassembled everything and added dielectric grease to every plug to stop any rust. I plugged every plug into it's corresponding part at least twice to get the grease to move on every pin and cover the surfaces.

If you are wondering about the last picture, take a look at my build thread. I hate body filler,

Question for Devin the OP. What's the paint looking like now since you first posted on the 24th of Jan. Did you throw some wax on after everything dried? Could you post up some more recent pics, I'm asking because acutally the results look really good to me, and only the acidity of the product needs to be addressed, DI water and baking soda, let it dry and hand turtle wax everything.

just a little side not for pressure washers, steam washers, you have to watch your pressure settings, i know the of the two big auto hobby shops on camp P (main side and north shop) i know you can change the pressure on them, so you have to watch out for that cause if you turn it up, yes, you can strip paint, but if you keep them a little lower, you can just take the grease off.
but i know the auto hobby at 29palms dosnt have that great little ability.

I've used purple power and it's more expensive brother (castrol superclean) for years to wash engine bays, dirtbikes, quads, and even really grimy vinyl and plastic interior parts with no problems. The important thing is to only leave it on there for a minute or two MAX, and rinse it VERY well. If you do that you won't have any problems with it. Also don't use it on cloth or foam parts or anything that you can't rinse well.

Here's the before and after from my engine bay that I washed with purple power and a cold water pressure washer to spray the loose stuff off first and then to rinse.

I still need to paint the TEMS covers and a few other things.

The purple power only needed 2 applications (one would have done it, but it was so dirty that I missed spots cause I couldn't tell where I had already scrubbed cause of all the stuff running off).

This pretty much changed my whole attitude toward this project... before cleaning the engine bay I kept asking myself why I was trying to resurrect this scrap heap.

Buddy of mine washed my engine bay and didn't tell me he was gonna hit it with purple power, everything did come out fairly nice but now I'm worried. I'll get a picture tomorrow, and then maybe in a month post up another and see if there is a difference. I will also look for a before picture.

I think if its rinsed off right away its not a problem.. Now if you just get a rag soaked in purple power and wipe down your engine bay, thats when you will see problems
