I did a BHG fix....while back...some may remember....

i changed to toyota red coolant based on several reccomendations by SM members...and i was checkin out the engine today after i ran it kidna hard and i saw the temp go up a little...not a lot...but a little and i decided to check my engine to make sure everything was still attached correctly... temps never went above half so i'm not worried... but

as i was looking i noticed some rather wet looking purple sludge forming on the water connection that is on the head JUST above the EGR cooler.

I'm guessing because its purple its just diluted toyota red coolant that got out, and maybe even reacted with something to dilute it or change its color...

but anyway... i looked with a mirror and it also appears that it dripped down just along the seal of the EGR cooler and the head, my guess is it's coming from the coolant line.

anybody ever see this? i'm thinking i might have to tighten that coolant line.... it also made the nut/side of the outlet metal purple. i'll get pics soon.

soo...if anyone has an idea whats up and causing this purple sludge, let me know. i'm not loosing coolant as far as i can tell, but maybe its dripping and drawing itself up the rubber tube. pics speak more than words...let me go take some.

I don't know how old your hose is, but if you have any cracks, just replace it. (Cheap insurance.)

I like worm clamps better than the wires, but both will clamp these stock hoses fine.

Other option is to run some "Bar's Leaks" in your cooling system... but that's the only stop leak I'd ever run in any engine. (It does not clog up the system in my experiance, but will stop small leaks, and areas where "weeping" leaking like yours is annoying more than anything else.

well i'm hoping the hose is fine. i cant remember checking it for cracks....but the confirmation of it being coolant was my main concern.... i might tighten the clamp or get a worm clamp because that wont crease it like this wire one does. i was kinda gentle because i was worrie di might pinch throuh the rubber.

i'll run it easy and get a new clamp/tighten my current one...thanks guys!

Just so you know...if that hose blows, you will lose ALL of your coolant in a very short time. If you're running on the highway, it will over heat to full scale in a second....before you notice anything is wrong. Mine did that on the old motor...I lost the HG shortly after...I'm pretty sure that $8 hose caused it ;)

wow...um. yeah i was worried about that and thought about how fast it might get hot... i wasnt sure but i figured pretty quick. i'll see how it is and clamp it nice and tight with a worm clamp

Like Adjuster said...Cheap insurance. You might as well replace it, especially if it's been on there a while.

Damn! $30! I don't remember paying that much for mine. In any case...think about it carefully. $30 for a hose or large $$$ for a head gasket in time and grief ;)

That hose will cut from that clkamp guaranteed. Mine did, those wires cut right thru it one day and burst coolant all over the engine. Luckily I pulled into work and my bud helped me fix it right there but it was hard to fit hands back there. I used generic tubing from a roll i got from Canadian Tire for about $4.00 I still have most of the roll left :p It didn't kink so don't somebody come back with that excuse not to use it ahahaa.

eric is right, generic tubing works really well for half of our stuff.

Hose runs fron water union on top centre of the back of the head where you can see, and it goes to a nipple about 12 inches to the left on the firewall. It connects your engine to the heater core.

can someone give me the inner and outer diameters? i really dont want it to blow and i might have to let someone borrow the car and i want to fix it TODAY after school.

so if i could get the dimensions and what type of hose...that'd be great. you said generic - what would the label say or what would i ask for? I'm worried about type because i need the one that wont kink and one the coolant won't hurt (if there is a hose that coolant CAN hurt)

thanks a lot!

is there a specific size i should get? or one that would work best? i figure they'll just have a bunch of sizes from me to pick from... but if i narrow it down it might help.

i got SOOOO LUCKY!! i was worried this would happen.. today my hose finally started to loose it. i hoped it was just kinda loose when i first found the leak (small drip leak) but didnt tighten it for fear of cutting the hose right through. aaand today when i got home it leaked much more than usual and dumped a bit on the exaust manifold right when i shut the car off to get the mail (mailbox is 1/4 mile from my house). i got back to the car and it began smoking...i thought OH SHIT my engine is going to catch fire (i saw a diesel truck do that after smoking once). soo i rolled it down the hill to my house instead of starting it up and risking catastrophic coolant loss. there wasnt much loss and no overheat or anything...but its probably cracked and ready to burst now.

so i have to fix it tonight. hehehe.
