pump sound?

Well i noticed recently that when i start my car, doesn't matter how long i let it idle and warm up, and start to drive....i hear a Pump of some sort, i guess pumping up for about 3 seconds, i have abs and it comes from that side of the car but brakes and suspension is my weakness when it comes to cars....except drum brakes(i have a old nova with 4 wheel drum, so i've rebuilt many of those in my day:])

I have an automatic tranny, i say this because it only happens whenever i put the vehicle in drive after starting the car from a cold start.

Any idea what might be going on?

Could be the ABS pump going through it's self test. On manuals that happens right away but on autos it may wait until the car is taken out of P or N. I say that because the NSW is connected to the ABS computer but I dunno for sure. Either way if that's what it is it's not a good sign he can hear it.

my auto supra buzzes once the car gets past 4 mph. It says it does that in the handbook. its very quiet tho so maybe you guys have missed it before.

My sierra self tests its abs when the ignition comes on and makes quite a loud buzzing sound for about 20 seconds

Now that I'm home I took at look at the books and it's what Finnon said. Solenoid and pump tests don't occur until speed exceeds 4 mph. If you want to know for sure if that's what you're hearing depress the brake pedal enough to turn on the brake lights and go above 4 mph. The test should not start until the pedal is released.
