Pulling the 7M-GTE

I have finally sourced my 1J and will be attempting to pull out the 7M-GTE. Can any one offer any helpful tips that would ensure a smooth process? What are the main tools I will need? I will have access to a 15 ton crane but would an engine hoist be easier to use? Thanks for any and all help and Happy New Year!

You should search. Maybe try looking at the stickies in the GE and/or GTE sections.

There is a very clear step-by-step process laid out. 49 steps.

15 ton crane is overkill. Not sure how accurately you can control said "crane", but a manual engine hoist is easy to use and allows for plenty of adjusting throughout the removal process.

EDIT**
Because I'm feeling oh-so-nice...

Much thanks, and you are right, I should have done a more thorough search, the only thing that is going to get me through this ordeal is my own persistence and thirst for knowledge. I do not know why it did not occur to me to look under the 7M-GTE section, freakin duh.

I plan on taking lots of pics and starting a thread, hopefully it will be interesting enough to get some followers. Thanks again!

Buy an engine leveler
Remove engine/trans together
Get large trays/pans to catch stuff you spill (trans fluid will come out tail shaft)
Remove radiator first, some people remove front bumper as well.
take your time.

Thanks for the tips Lewis, duly noted. I would assume that it would make sense to drain as many fluids as possible before disconnecting anything as well.

Yeah, and every motor that I have pulled from a supra (3 different cars, 4 times all togather) I've gotten gear lube in my hair, and that shit stinks.

Raise the engine up a little bit and it will be easier to get the gas lines.

PB Blaster works WAY better than WD-40. Just saying. I spray metallic parts that I don't want to rust while sitting with WD-40.

To answer the OP: Just take it slowly. After you get the gas lines, I suggest using zip-ties to hold the lines up (I tied them to the brake lines). I also recommend putting a bag over the end so that debris doesn't get into the fuel feed.

You'll need to drain the oil from the engine (duh), and from the power steering. Draining it from the transmission is optional (might as well and change the fluid while you're at it, right?)

I recommend using an engine hoist, and extending the boom (arm) out as far as it will safely go to give you more allowed height to raise the engine.

Using a leveler will help a LOT, especially for reinstall.

Be aware of the upper radiator support and be careful not to damage it. It is very easily bent.

Most important thing: take your time!

It will take 2 people if you dont have an engine leveler...

Not necessarily. I pulled my motor/trans twice alone with no load leveler. You just have to pay very close attention to angles, and how you hook the chain. ;)

That being said, I'll never do it without a leveler again. LOL.

Thought I'd share a few pics, which I will of course include in the swap thread once I get everything on a roll.

Got the hood off (woohoo!!), and drained all the coolant from the radiator. I attempted to get the rear coolant purge bolt off, but that fucker will not budge and I have no room to get enough torque on it with the car on stands. I then tried to take the exhaust off to create more room to get into the bolt, but the bolts from the exhaust to the turbo elbow seem to be stuck even worse. I hosed them with WD-40 and just left it alone. I think I need to find a lift, working on jack stands sucks ass.

Oh yeah wanted to show you guys the crane as well, its actually a 10 ton, and its capable of very minute and slow movements, the guys that work in my shop apparently take motors out of their mud track cars all the time with it.

You should be alright to pull the down pipe along with the motor (I could be wrong, never done it that way before). I know how much of a PITA it is to get that bottom inside downpipe nut off... Been so long since I've messed with a 7m much.

Uh, as for the crane, good job! Seriously, I used to work for a crane inspection company up here, it's fun playing with those things. :)

Hopefully you thought of this, but it's always a good idea to mark on your hood latches (the arms that hold them to the chassis near the back of the engine bay) where your hood was with a few lines from a marker... We didn't on mine and had to realign my hood, yet again. Just saves a bit of a minor headache is all...

Good luck!

So I've been more or less following the thread to pull out the 7M. I attached the breaker bar to the crank pulley bolt and clicked the car over, but it won't bust loose. Is it completely necessary to remove the nut? I'm assuming that it needs to come off because of clearance issues with the pulley when its time to pull the motor out. Am I right?

I never removed my crank pulley, i did remove the fan. with out the right tools and experience a crank pulley could end a project fast. one of the hardest parts to remove, i once knew of a shop that took a air hammer chisel to a crank pulley bolt as a last resort.
