Hey all,

Anyone have any ideas on how to pull a head solo without a hoist? I've got the head loose and ready to go but can't seem to find a good way to get it out.

I tried standing with my body directly above it and picking it up but then I realized that now I had it up I couldn't set it down anywhere accessible.

Any tips/suggestions appreciated.

ive done it before, you just need enough upper body strength.

be extremely careful not to scratch the sealing surfaces, it is very easy to do when pulling it off by hand.

I think youre gonna have to get another person to help you out, or put something flat in the bay so you can rest it on once you get it off, then get out of the bay from the surface you put it on.

I just lifted it all the way out of the engine bay and had a plank of wood on the ground I walked over to. If you can't get it - just get someone to help you. It's not that heavy.

Aww shit.

Hurried and missed the fuel line on ex. side.

Now it's super-tightened -- at least I know why the head seemed so heavy. :crazy1:

Kinda had 4 hours to pull the head for the first time. I think overlooking one step out of about 50 isn't that bad.

I appreciate the attempted humor.

edit: not to mention it's 31 degrees outside and 3:20am :biglaugh:

(need to know the status of the head before 5:00)

Four hours is good for the first time, and nobody would argue that it's easy to overlook something like that.

I just pictured a skinny teenage kid trying to lift the head off and... (started laughing again)
I'm sorry, it's still funny.

Congrats, you did great.

Now that I picture that it does seem pretty fk'n funny.

Unfortunately the banjo bolt has become extremely stuck thanks to my pull on the head.

Can't get it loose no matter what -- the whole bracket is bending with it.

Try some penetrating oil and let it sit for awhile.

Your probably going to have to replace the banjo bolt anyway since it's probably corroded from being in the head for so long (which would explain why it's not coming out).

I've had them stick and be somewhat difficult, but not that bad, but I can certainly see how it could easily happen.

You could heat up the head with a propane torch around where the banjo bolt goes in, but you'd better be very careful not to get it too hot or it could warp or crack the head.

Heating it up should be a last resort. Try penetrating oil, some sleep, and then take another shot at it.

I'd hold off on torching that fuel line...

You're talking about where the line bolts to the support at the bottom of the engine right? Not where it connects with the pulsation dampener up top.

Either way you have two choices...penetrating oil or heat.

Are you using a 12 pt socket (so you get a good hold on the union bolt)?

See if you can get enough clearance to use the biggest breaker-bar you can fit in there. Leverage is your friend in this situation.

Obviously if you have to use heat, you want to be sure there's no gas in the line, or any where in the vicinity.

Word of experience, It's pretty late and it sounds like you've been at this for a while. It's probably a good idea to try again after you get some sleep and approach it with a fresh set of eyes.
