Pull engine with tranny?

In an earlier post I mentioned that I had pulled the engine and trans as a unit. I was suprised at how many people responded who just pull the engine. I have always pulled the engine and trans together wether an A/T or manual. I found that removing the 8 or so additional bolts and speedo cable saves a ton of heartache and time especially when you consider how hard it is to access the starter bolts, top engine bolts or aligning the clutch.
Just wondered how the rest of the world did it, maybe I might learn something useful.

I've done both. Certain cars, it's easier to leave the transmission in. It's ALWAYS easier of you don't have a load leveller, even if you have to move the transmission to get to the bolts.

With the load leveller, IMO, it'a s no-brainer. Pull both.

i usauly pull both.

although it also depends what i am doing at the time of the pull.

when i was auto i pulled the engine by it's self 3 times, and the tranny out 2 with it.

ive swapped 5spd tran's and also done 2 clutchs..

i wont put up with the hassle of drianing fluids and pulling the ecu harness for a friend though.. if they need clutch work i'll drop they tranny out for them.

I pull both. If I need the tranny off, I'll pull that alone... but if the engine is coming out, the tranny is coming with it.

I pulled both together with the hood still on the car in freezing temperature. No problems here. Gaved me a chance to clean up the bay better.

You're a braver man than I. I'd never leave the hood on.

Pull it together. Saves time and effort. I am a modern day "He-man" and that r154 is kinda heavy. It was a nice surprise laying on my chest and it was even more fun putting it up by myself …. Well not really I had to use a jack after a while.

bench pressing transmissions in suck, if you dont have the right tools and jacks, dont attempt. Too many times a buddy called me up out of the blue trying to swap a clutch and I wound up kicking the jack out and have to man handle the trans, nothing sucks more when its not aligned right either and you have to restab it. If I dont buy a trans jack by the time I swap my clutch, Im paying someone with a lift!

I usually pull both, but last time I just pulled the trans and swapped in my new trans.

Honestly, it was more difficult than pulling the engine/trans.

If I had a lift and didn't have to use jackstands, than maybe I would just pull one or the other and not both.

But on the ground, I'd definitely pull both.

I used to take the hood off but it gets far more damage that way so now I pop the struts and lean it back on some pipe lagging/roll cage cushion.

Engine+trans here also. I even prefer it front wheel drive. Like stated above it is easier to get everything lined up.
