what are the symptoms of a ****ed prop shaft?

I was at a mates house before picking him up on the way to the pub to see some mates. I always have to reverse out of his street and it felt as if the car was clunking in reverse. it kinda felt like when a wheel bearing has worn real bad except with it passing its mot only a few weeks ago, I thought this to be unlikely. plus it didnt seem to pull to either side at all.

It has always clunked when ive been reverse parking when i turn the wheel but i cant think if that is anything to do with this.

It makes no noise or anything going forwards at any speeds

There is this large bearing in the middle of your driveshaft, that may have gone bad. Your driveshaft could have also because unbalanced.

Are you sure this is not coming from the rear differential? Like Fletch, tho, I would bet it was in the carrier bearing in the center.

Sounds like play in the diff.

We refer to it as a Drivesaft. I agree withe ForcedTorqe. Sounds like the carrier bearing is going bad. You can Replace the whole prop shaft with a 1 piece steel or Alum. shaft for about the same or less then it would cost you to replace the carrier bearing, the 4 U-joints & to have it re balanced if needed. Contact JawsGear on here for info on actual cost.

hmmm well my dad had to replace the front prop shaft on his ford sierra 4x4 a while back and he recomended a local company. i think ill try them first.

do you guys think this is deffo the problem? ive never experienced a prop shaft problem before.

oh and btw my car is just short of 100k miles and its a 7mge auto if that makes a difference.

is there any sure fire way to check if its a bad carrier bearing?

Yea, put her up on a lift or jack stands. Grab the Prop shaft near the center bearing & pull it up & down & side to side. If you have 1/4" or more of play then it needs to be replaced. While its out that would be a good time to replace the the 4 u-joints. I just went through this with my Turbo Auto & it was less to replace it with a 1 pc driveshaft from JawsGear. Comes with new thicker yokes & new heavy duty U-joints.

update time lol

I have just been for a drive and i can hear a noise from the back drivers side. its like a whish whish whish whish sort of noise that remains constant during turns and whilst breaking or accelerating. Could this be a uj in the drive shafts from the diff?

from memory the front drive arms on the sierra made the same clunk type noise i described above also when they failed. well one went bang and nearly flipped the car over on an a road lol.
