Hello everyone, i am new here to SM and have searched your forums endlessly for information and parts with my 1jz swap. it has been such a help for information and recently for some used parts for my swap. so id just like to say thanks for everything but now onto the point. I recently purchased a 1987 Pearl White, Targa, 5 spd, Turbo (7mGTE)MA70 Supra. It was in very nice condition and had 250 000KM on the motor and body with the headgasket done only 17 000 KM ago. Took the car for a test drive and instantly fell for it. After driving for a couple thousand km my mechanic noticed that it was starting to smoke and that one of the valves was making a noise. I went down to the local JDM import store to inquire what their thoughts were. He convinced me to do a 1JZ swap instead of rebuilding the 7M. I agreed because i had ridden in a friends 1jz soarer and was amazed by the potential and reliability of the motor. I purchased a front clip of a 91 jdm supra which was the doner for the motor and a few other parts. That is a little bit of history about my car (i will be posting pictures as soon as i get them off my camera so you all can see) and i have been working on it for the last couple of months trying to put everything back together in perfect condition. Most of the time was spent waiting on parts but now that most of the things are in and im almost ready to drop the motor back in i figured id write about the project. hope you enjoy!

id like to start off by listing some of the parts / problems i had with the swap. when i purchased the front clip for the swap i did so because it came with many of the things i would need for the swap like the full uncut wiring harness and 5spd ecu, the motor mounts, the front cradle, newer bilstein front struts / shocks etc, clutch / flywheel, 1jz bellhousing (my tranny is in great shape). The problem with this was that even though everything was there it wasnt neccisarily usable. They told me there was 70% left on the clutch but when i inspected it i doubt i could have driven it around the block, and the flywheel was scortched to all hell (new clutch and flywheel machining 800$). The motor mounts were torn which meant new ones were needed which were $400(i dont believe in repairing something like that so total replacement was needed). Thats enough ranting about that, i was more just trying to say that even though you buy a front clip dont expect that everything will just be perfect!

About 2 months ago now i bought the clip and within a day had the motor out and ready for inspection. This is when i started to notice that some time and work was going to be needed to get this 1jz up to my standards. Here are some of the things i wanted to replace on the car:

-ACT hard plate clutch
-new timing belt
-new timing belt tensioner
-new timing belt idler pully
-mishimoto radiator (they are redesigning it for better fitment so im still waiting for this)
-samco silicone radiator hoses
-new rear main seal, and rear main seal housing gasket
-new serpentine belt
-HKS advanceable cam gears (these didnt need replacing i just liked them)
-i bought some reground HKS cam SHAFTS (brand new) off a buddy who never had a chance to put them in his soarer (i heared shimming the valves is a hell of a job!) but these are not going in right now
-custom power steering fluid line needed to the swap which i just purchased off a sm member (very handy)
-BIC 3.5' dowpipe, ceramic coated with all the bells and whistles
-

thats all i can think of for now, but i am ordering also right away a greddy intercooler kit. Other than that i want to keep the engine pretty stock for the initial start up. I also dropped the tranny off at the shop for an inspection and new seals just to make sure everything was in top notch. So at my current state i am still going to be waiting about 6 weeks for my radiator but it is snowing now in Canada so she is parked at the shop indoors for the winter anyways. I have both of the motors side by side in my shop so just looking at them side by side makes me dream of what this new engine will do! Does anyone know what the maximum potential for the stock turbos is? is 400whp attainable with the right mods? As you have probably noticed I am not a mechanic so most of the work was done by my best friend who is (i did all of the sanding and shining on the motor! lol). If anyone doing a swap has any questions (as i know we had to customize a couple of things to get everything to fit) id be more than happy to ask him for ya! As soon as my p/s line gets here im going to attach it and drop the 1jz in so hopefully this week i will be able to give you an update on what is going on. At this point we will be doing the wiring harness (which sounds fun) and soon she will be ready for the test drive.

as i said earlier i will get some pictures up here asap (pictures worth a thousand words right?)

thanks for reading

Thanks for the info on that bro! i have been looking for that information for quite some time now! maybe im just bad at searching forums as this is the first one ive been on. anyways, that wont be a problem as i would like to either upgrade the twins or go big single. I do like the idea of the upgraded twins tho to be honest what do you think? :1zhelp:

Here is a little update for anyone interested! I had an unfortunate accident and lost my DD which was a 94 Accord EX-R, mostly stock exept for coilovers and chrome 18's. My mechanic was driving my car when a Semi-Truck passing him on the highway at 110km/h changed lanes into him. He was drug for 40 feet or so in front of the rear trailer tires and when he finally unhooked he was sent spinning into the ditch! This stalled the car out and he was unable to catch the guy who didnt even stop! So now i am out my car (the whole drivers side is completely smashed and the engine light was on) which i will collect no insurance as the hit and run fund in Alberta Canada was abolished a few years ago! Anyways I have now got a 98 GMC 1/2 Ton 6.5L Turbo Diesel which is working great for the winter, but was not so great on the pocket book! Enough ranting on that heres the update on the Supra!

This week while I was away my mechanic put the 1J into my car and started hooking up all the lines. Everything worked out great except for one of my power steering line bolts is too short. Ill post some pics today too. We tried to hook the transmission up last night because he needed my hand but we ran into some clearance issues and i was wondering if anyone had some advice. We have the motor in and thought we would be able to bolt up tranny/bellhousing but as I said we couldnt get it to fit! Today we are going to drop the motor out the bottom of the car and bolt it up as one piece. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. To my understanding these cars are built from the bottom so I figured this would be the way to do it? Thanks! Hopefully engine should be running by next weekend ill keep you posted!

sorry bout to hear about your accord, but the car looks pretty sweet so far.
I just finished my 1jz swap less than a week ago, and all I have is 3" exhaust and intake and let me tell you,
as soon as you hit 4k rpm your gonna be fishtailing in 1st and 2nd, sometimes even 3rd!!

its incredible how much power it makes over a 7mge

That sounds sweet! I dont have many upgrades but will have a full 3.5' exhaust with my BIC DP, i need to get an intake made too! I was also gonna get a new intercooler right away but im kinda short on $$ for a bit so i swapped the stock 1J one in for now. Did you do the swap yourself or what?

For your turbo questions, I would say for sure ditch the stock twins. They are fery weak and problematic above 1 bar. Single turbo would be best for response time since you will have 6 pulses driving a single wheel. If you are goin for drift/ road race, I would say the setup you want is one that doesn't necessarily go for big #'s since it takes forever to get there on smaller motors. Do a GT3582R,ceramic your exhaust manifold, turbine side and Cam the motor. That kind of setup is good for 5-600 to the wheels with a very responsive spool time.

Super bummer on the DD. Glad you're ok.

So is the bellhousing not clearing the tunnel?

Wow, thanks for the great info, im not really too sure about all the things you said but it gives me some new stuff to research, greatly appreciated. Im not building a drift car at all, if anything the complete opposite. I want to have a really clean looking car that looks mostly stock except for the wheels and lowered. I definatly want to take it to the track, but more for 1/4 mile and laps not drifting. I am looking for something with good response too as i dont want to be hitting boost at like 5000rpm.

Happy to help as best as I can. I am a guy that likes "streetability" in my cars so response time is super important. Important things from my experience are that if turbo lag is an issue, then cams and Ceramic coating will help the most with whatever turbo setup you do.

yeah the bellhosing isnt clearing the tunnel up at the front right near the motor. Cant lift it high enough to get the crank in? i believe...

Hmm, I think the 1j is a little taller than the 7m so that may be part of the problem with tilting it. Can you put the car up on jack stands? have a cherry picker right?

Another thought... I see you have an 87, and you bought a full clip. Are you using the JDM subframe or the 87 with custom mounts?

JDM subframe with upgraded mounts (round style) i had to switch the steering rack over to LHD and all that shit.
and yes i do have a cherry picker.....and lots of stands / jacks

With the 89+ subframe all the clearances should be fine. I would asy then just to try and install it as an assembly. Trans attatched to the motor. Get someone under the car after you get it up on the stands, to guide the shifter extension housing, and just wiggle it little by little. If you are carefull you should be able to squeeze it.
