OK, so I was driving my 82 to work today, minding my own business when all of a sudden I hear this *Whoosh* sound and then a grinding noise... I was in 5th gear running about 60-ish, took it up to about 90 (didn't downshift) and that's when it happened. I wasn't even boosting.

So I get into town and now on deceleration there is this loud-ass grinding noise and I can smell something similar to gas (but not gas, think gear oil :nono: )

This piece is toast... isn't it?

4.11's ftl

Sounds to me like a broken ring and pinion or spider gears. Let me know if you need any parts or a complete diff.

When you say rebuild kit, what do you mean? Gears, Bearings Posi or all of the above?

I had a problem with my rear end...but proper diet and less "pushing" cleared it right up! :biglaugh:

But seriously, swapping out a rear end isnt the hardest job in the world, but its not the easiest either. Basically anytime you gotta get on your back to fix a problem, its gonna suck. Ive never been inside a Supra 3rd member but usually rebuilding them requires some special tools and some knowledge in how to shim it properly. Personally, I prefer to just drop in a decent used unit as a whole, rather than rebuilding them.

well if the supra rear is anything like my '94 yota pickup rear, its actually fairly simple. they use adjusting rings that take the place of shims and are threaded. to get the right preload and backlash u just turn the rings on either side and make the needed adjustments. rather then having to order shims and wait for tehm to come in u just use what u got and adjust it.

i put a power trax lock right in my truck and it was really simple, i just marked the adjuster rings, took it apart, took off the ring gear installed the locker put it back in and turned the rings to where they were. put it back in the truck and havnt had a problem since.

Cost boils down to what is actually wron in the differential. Simple rebuild kit cost $122.00. You have to get it out and take it to a shop or send it to us so it can be inspected.

i was just wondering how much you would get for a set of clutches and steels for a mk3 rear? basicly to rebuild it without bearings or anything, just the clutches and steels if there worn?
